'74 Holiday 18 Restore Mod.... Convert to open bow.

I see Classiccat has got it covered. I was lucky to not have that problem and I added a reinforcement to ovoid it. 1/8" 5052 aluminum bent to fit the top of the ribs and to the hull sides. All the solid rivets are above the water line and blinds in the rib tops. Bonus of covering the...

'74 Holiday 18 Restore Mod.... Convert to open bow.

The open bow should be nice for fresh water fishing. You should have a look for cracking in the hull where the end of the ribs rivet on. The ribs look like they are not flat to the hull in the picture. It's a common problem.

    1976 Mariner Rebuild

That windshield is nice. I made a similar one for my Holiday and started getting corrosion under the rubber gasket soon after being put in service. I cleaned all the corrosion spots and greased the contact area with brake lubricant(silicone grease) and it seems to be better. I'm curious...

    G/Flex question on aluminum boats

I have used g/flex for seams with great results. I heat the seam carefully with a torch before and during to ensure good penetration and trapped moisture is removed. Rivets that leak after re bucking should be replaced.

    Starcraft Holiday 18 make over

I found a problem with my windshield frame corroding under the rubber trim that holds the glass. I noticed a small bit of powdery corrosion shortly after I built it. The boat is rinsed with fresh water after every trip in the ocean. I pulled the glass to find pits half way through...

    1974 Starcraft 21’ Holiday

I would inspect everything for cracks and corrosion before spending more money. Looking and cleaning is cheap. Transom skins can be replaced. I don't like the idea of a new layer over a corroded mess because water trapped inside will continue corrosion. I had to replace my transom and...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I think too many people get caught up in the perfect paint job. Old boats are meant to spread joy with family and friends and the quest for ultimate shine can delay that. If a boat is safe and water tight it should be making memories.

    Starcraft Holiday 18 make over

When I received the boat it had no knee brace. The person who put did the i/o conversion probably tossed it. Someone reinstalled an outboard motor and built a heavy duty 1/4" splash well that resulted in a solid engine mounting even though the wood was garbage. I attached the bottom of my...

    Flooring question

If I would have one of those fancy forstner bits I might have used it instead. This home made tool doesn't taper the top of the 3/16" hole.

    Flooring question

Here's something I whipped up. 5/8" spade bit with a 3/16" drill shank welded in the center. Please ignore the crap weld🤣...it works. The holes are pre drilled to 3/16". I mixed g flex epoxy in small batches to fill the holes flush.

    Starcraft Holiday 18 make over

My drain plug is an aluminum version of the plastic splash well drains. Using a stainless 1/4" pipe plug outside. The shop towel in the center wicks water out during storage that won't reach the drain hole. Last trip striper fishing I found someone's braided line. Shaft seal appears fine...

    Starcraft Holiday 18 make over

1_ trying to use any space possible I found a net from a junk car to store life jackets(and Sponge head) under the bow. I can fit some short rods or 2pc rods in the rod rack. The stern light is safely attached to one of the original wood supports. 2_taken from inside the bow storage this...

    Starcraft Holiday 18 make over

1_ Found some plastic while dumpster diving at my friends shop. Cut to shape on the band saw, router the edges and countersink screw holes. Made nice battery and fuel tank retainers. 2_ this is how I extended the stringers and riveted them to tabs welded to my transom frame

    Starcraft Holiday 18 make over

A few things I forgot to show that might give someone else an idea. 1 _Welded a mounting pad for the transducer with enough room for a small anode. The pad is thick enough to use #10 /24 stainless fastener threaded in it. No extra holes in transom😀 2_ Fuel filter with water drain. Mounted...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Looking good. I left my transom bare and it's not showing any signs of corrosion. I leave it in fresh water for weeks at a time. I always rinse with fresh water after trips to the ocean. The water line and below is a little different shade of gray.

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

You might consider two separate bilge pumps with separate float switches. I nearly sunk my boat at the dock after a very heavy rain when the float switch failed. My boat was unattended for only two or three days and you're talking weeks.
