1989 Force 85 HP Starter Disengages

The bendix needs to be lifted up to engage the worm gear and then using a crescent wrench and a 5/8 or 11/16 wrench to unscrew the top nut. I believe the top nut is a locking type nut?? Make sure the battery cables aren't crossed, that can make the starter go backwards(ask me how I know). Second...

1989 Force 85 HP Starter Disengages

No cleaning the bendix. Any cleaners or sprays that get up inside them make them slip. The only thing you can do is: q-tip up in the worm gear, then clean the armature shaft and reapply a small amount of grease to the worm gear. Too much will ruin the bendix. The bendix has a rubber hub like the...

Points file, emery board, fingernail file and even a zipper work well. The smaller the zipper the better(take the pants off the kid first, works better)

    carb adj 1997 50 hp

Thanks Jiggz, pretty much a wind event and no real damage here. The storm entered Fl. far enough north and went at the right direction and it wasn't bad here. Lots of leaves and twigs, the trailer didn't even shake like the last time. Gods been watching over me, the storms all seem to be just...

Sea King 9.2hp will not Spark

Try using a file on the points, sandpaper might not be enough?? Try swapping the condensers around and see if the spark changes or follows the move? Franz Marine might have some parts for something that old.

Like Jiggz says about 1 1/8 to 1 1/2?? If your having trouble test for air leaks on the intake side, Starting fluid test: start motor and then spray SF around the intake side, if it makes a difference in the way it runs then it's sucking air. Fix the gasket. This needs to be done in the water...

Test the over heat system. Might be getting hot?? Key on, ground the orange lead at the buss bar. That should make the alarm sound off. The alarm is small and can be hardly heard when the motor runs. I have a heat gun to test the temps. $16 Amazon(years ago)

Hooking up jump box to starter 1987 force 85 to diagnose

I made my own using an L bracket. Get a BIG L bracket , drill out the top hole so a heavier bolt can be used. Then mount it using a 1/4-20 bolt. The 1/4-20 is a bit light but will work, or drill and tap to 5/16 .

    Motor dies then won't start

Over the years: people who buy the NEW Chinese starters end up having some kind of trouble with them. Some of the ones I've dealt with the magnets break loose or break themselves or the bendix drops out too soon. I've found that rebuilding the OEM starter is the way to go. I buy the "Mercury"...
