    OMC 5.7 Questions

I don't mind the I/O setup comparative to outboards. Each has it's advantages, though outboards have regained some ground in the last several years - so they are becoming more popular. Depending on the year of the OMC, there are still parts available and support. But OMC has been gone for a...

Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

Sorry Kenny - I didn't mean the drive was binding on the pivot caps. My thought was since he had the quadrant gear removed (Posts #7 & #9), the drive should lift freely. But he's saying it doesn't lift freely. Racerone is thinking it's binding on the two pins at the bottom of the intermediate...

    '94 Bass Tracker handling question

Is it a tiller steer or do you have a helm? The more shallow the hull is the more it won't "cut" through chop and waves. The hull will want to get on top of them more often than not and might (in some cases) "walk" on you a little bit. That's probably one of the big differences. Taking it slow...

Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

With the quadrant drive off, if the drive is "jammed" and won't raise - I would loosen the pivot caps to see if the ball gears have jammed up; remove the entire leg if necessary. BUT ... be careful of your shifting cables.

    Opinions on winter storage?

Dry air (ambient air) is actually a decent insulator. Having your boat in a covered building, even without heat, is helpful. My boat stays in an attached garage, but even if you had it in detached barn, that's ahead of just sitting out in my opinion.

    My new trucklet!

Funny to me (and I don't mean any knock on the trucklet), compared to the El Camino and the old Ford truck - that Hyundai isn't that small! I saw the same thing with my daughter's '08 Mustang parked next to my FIL's '64. I always have in my head the older cars being these big ole' beasts and...

How fast have you gotten your sailboat?

We had our Capri 14 up to about 10kts probably a few times. But we typically didn't feel like sailing that boat as hard as it could go. According to the data it'll get up around 15kts.

    Rivers & Open Sea

I always recommend spending some time around the marinas you're likely to boat out of most. See what people are using in the areas you want to boat. If possible, rent a couple of different boats to try them out.

    Correct: preferable, but not critical.

    Blower cover removal

On my boat, it would be best to go behind the gunwale and push outward. If I spent some time looking, once the screws were out, it's possible that a longer screwdriver or something could be used to pry or pull from outside (not sure).

    1989 Bayliner Capri Alarm

Yup. L drive. Kinda' two bad ideas in one package. Bayliners from that era weren't well built, and the Force outboards had a pretty bad reputation. And making a complicated outdrive from a Force leg didn't work out too well. - - you would have to put a lot of work into a system that would be...

    1989 Bayliner Capri Alarm

Pictures will help, but what an L drive will be is effectively an outboard that is "inside" the boat. The engine will be vertical like an outboard, not horizontal like a sterndrive or inboard. The out drive will come straight down out of the boat (sort of like an outboard leg) instead of off the...

What are your opinions on this boat?

No way in the world I'd spend $3K or $8K on a non-running boat. If dude wants to fix the boat, then I would look at it and decide if I could afford what he was willing to let it go for. I pulled the $500 offer stunt once, and it worked out. But even in that case I wouldn't have spent even $1,000...
