1979 Baja Tri 16 restoration project

I am posting some of my boats rot when I started(to prove we all have had that heart sinking feeling). I was told I was stupid for taking the project on and that they will never get in that boat(they weren't wrong at the time) now that it is almost done they are fighting over who is going to go...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Finally have spark and the boat running again. I didnt do a lot this weekend because the heat index is above 100 where I am at. Got her started again and modified the winch on the trailer so I could install a new strap. The cable that was on mine was falling apart. I still have to weld the...

    1978 MonArk SuperSport Restoration

Its best to cut the entire deck out and go with all new wood. Not much more work and zero chance of leaving something wet/rotted. For the transom only way is to do core samples along the bottom and see (inside and dont go all the way through). If good patch the holes, if not you have to...

    is it worth trying

Start by checking for any soft spots on the deck. If any spot is soft chances are stringers and transom are shot. Even if there is not doesn't mean that they are good. If you can access the stringers (underdeck storage) drill a core sample. Use 1/4 bit dont go all the way through and...

    My 1981 Citation Marquis...

I am talking about just for laminating the pieces of ply together to get the proper thickness. Not to glue to the hull, although many have and to bed stringers with success. I used PL to laminate the transom wood and bonded the wood to the hull with PB(thickened resin) on mine

They probably laminated the 2 pieces together with csm to get the proper thickness. You can do it like that. Others use PL to laminate the 2 pieces together. You can make the whole transom glass it all then glue it in and tab the outside or glue in tab the outside then glass it in. Not...

Screw Hole Repair / Below Water Line

Stringers, transom, bulkheads, and deck are all structural in a fiberglass boat. If you remove them without properly supporting the hull it will deform the hull.

    Resin Cracks

I was talking about the grinder, i missed the part about you using a belt sander (my bad). Not sure about their sanders, I used a grinder for mine.

    Resin Cracks

The burgundy grinders from harbor freight work good for that. They are cheap so you are not tearing up expensive tools. Just dont go with the cheaper black grinder from there those dont last at all

The sides can be 3/4 ply and it shouldn't interfere with anything. Going thicker is not bad but do not put less than what was there. You should also be able to double some 3/4 for the keyhole. There is a minimum thickness for a stern drive around the keyhole, if its a mercruiser it is...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Not much to update, still waiting on my part(can only blame myself for that one) Had a good day though on the lake checking out some bass boats. The Bass Pro amateur qualifier was going on at lake St clair so I took my boys and had a good time. They really want Kevin Van Dams boat (me too)...

    Is it worth fixing up?

Definitely not a cheap project Think of it this way, new boat around the same style is around 20k, will be solid Used boat around 5k, more than likely needs the same amount of work Restore yours 2.5k-5k, if done right will be more solid than the new boat and will still be solid (if taken...

Need Plan of Attack: Stringer Replacement - 16.5' Fiberglass Boat

Transoms will rot around the keyhole from water intrusion from around the gimbal housing and any accessories on the back. If a chunk came off with your fingers then I would replace it for sure. If you are doing 1 stringer and the transom it is pointless to not replace it all. It is not...

    Is it worth fixing up?

If the boat has that much sentimental value it is worth restoring for that fact alone. It is a great project to do with the kids I am restoring a 73 sea ray with my 2 sons. With that said, If it sat outside uncovered it probably is going to be a complete gut and replace of all the wood Only...

Need Plan of Attack: Stringer Replacement - 16.5' Fiberglass Boat

The structure can give the appearance of being solid and the cores rotted, the fiberglass can remain hard. The stringers are attached together by the bulkheads normally wood on wood then covered. Water can travel through the wood and rot all of it from one spot that is open to water.

Need Plan of Attack: Stringer Replacement - 16.5' Fiberglass Boat

Friscoboater has some good videos on youtube. As stated above, make sure that is your only area with rot. Usually if one stringer is bad the other one is also, along with the transom and bulkheads. Also if you only replace one, how long will it be for the other side to rot. At that point...

    PL question

I used it to bond 2 pieces of 3/4 ply together for the transom of my project. Lots of people have used it. I did a test piece and tried to break it apart, the wood broke before the bond did. Most peoples complaints are the curing time. You can bond the stringers then once cured use...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Well, my master mechanic comment came back to bite me! I accidentally blew out my pertronix. I broke one of the wire connections off for the 12v coil so I decided to just jump 12v (had a jumper in arms reach) so it would run and I could dial her in. Had to keep pulling it off to kill the motor...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Luckily I was a master mechanic (let my certifications expire) Went with a stern drive due to the fact that it is basically a car motor and I could work on it. Not to much experience with outboards though. I have maintained my 9.9 so I never really needed to do anything to it. 99% of working...

    Mercruiser 3.0 hot coil

On the pertronix ignitor if you leave the ignition key in the on position and not started the coil will get hot. I just did it today unfortunately, I wont know if I burned up the pertronix until tomorrow hopefully I didnt
