    Crooked or warped transom

If you are using poly and the 1700 you should be putting at least 3/4 CSM in between the layers of 1700. The 1708 is the same thing with the 3/4 CSM already stitched on. I believe if you are using epoxy you can just use the 1700 but not 100% sure ( I used poly on my boat).

Advice on transom , stringers and floor rebuild

Most people use 1/4 from what I see. I didnt buy any milled or chopped glass for mine. I used a cross cut paper shredder and shredded the cut offs of csm and mixed it in. They came out different sizes but when mixed in worked out good. If any pieces came out to big I used scissors to cut...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

I mic'ed the transom at 1.987 so 13 thousands short of what Merc recommends, so I put 2 layers of 1708 (found a resource saying that 1 layer is 4 hundredths thick) so should be good. I will know for sure when I cut the keyhole again and re mic it. I also put the layer of chop down in the...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Finished glassing the deck, need to clean up some edges once dried. I still need a couple more layers around the keyhole to get the proper thickness and put a layer of mat in the ski locker and bilge before I can paint those. Then I can fair out the repairs to the outside of the hull and get...

    Plywood floor replacement...Questions

Not being a full resto is not an excuse for using a build method that is sub par. Will your way work? Possibly or possibly not. Even glassing pressure treated wood that is not properly and fully dried will more than likely delaminate. An extra 20 pounds probably doesn't matter unless your...

That doesn't sound like a good time. Luckily nothing broke might have a few bruises come tomorrow.

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Didn't get a whole lot done, had to run to the local glass supplier to pick up another 5 gal of resin and a few more yards of 1708. I did manage to get all the foam plugs glassed back in, the deck around the bilge and under the bow glassed. I was going to finish the last little bit, but...

Beginning of 1979 Cobia Sportster 18vbr Restoration

On mine if it was solid and was fully saturated with resin (no dry spots of weave) I left it. Smooth it out the best you can and the thickened resin used to bond will fill in low spots.

Beginning of 1979 Cobia Sportster 18vbr Restoration

It really all depends on the size of the transom, material used (1708 will take in more than you think for proper wet out). Even cutting a perfectly fitting transom the fillets and gluing the transom to the hull will take up a decent amount of resin, although the better fitting the less you...

    Rotted transom good stringers.

You will find as you go that the factory cuts lots of corners. Get em out fast and sell now mentality. If done properly the boat will go another 50 years, keep up the good work.

Got the rest foamed and cleaned up and ready for glass! I also placed my seats and cut my sacrificial bases for the seats and fuel tank. Hoping I can move enough tomorrow to actually get it glassed😴.

Well I have half of the foam poured, and the motor mount cut. I have to take a break so the admiral can go get her hair done (Gotta keep her happy). I found that using a spade bit on a driver works great for mixing. Just gotta be careful to not put a hole in the cup (hasn't happened yet). I...

    Rotted transom good stringers.

As indicated above, due to that amount of rot it has chances are probably close to zero of good stringers. Once the floor is up grab a 1/4" drill bit, drill holes along the bottom of the stringers ( dont go all the way through) and inspect the condition of the shavings. Do this at minimum of...

    Rotted transom good stringers.

Welcome, Post some pictures of what your working on, it helps determine the proper course of action. (Otherwise the help will just be generic responses of what the standard procedure is) How did you determine the stringers are good? The only way to tell is to take core samples You can cut...

I am ready for foam. Just have to wait until tomorrow for better foaming weather. I was working on the front mount and would like some input. I attached pics of the original mount sitting in the bilge. I cut a 4x4 down to correct dimensions to see how I liked it. The original just sat in...

Water from bilge screw holes - NEED ADVICE!!!

If that wood does not extend to the stringer or the transom(shouldn't, but does not mean there is not rot elsewhere on a 21 yr old boat) "that" rot will not extend to other places. All it is used for is to secure the bilge pump. Worse case is the pump comes loose and you have to secure the...

Water from bilge screw holes - NEED ADVICE!!!

Welcome It is a sacrificial piece of wood just for mounting the bilge. More than likely the whole piece is completely gone. The harder option is to cut that piece of wood out glass in a new one and gel coat it. Another option is to try a pour in product i believe it is called git rot or...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

I re-read the pouring foam ins and out thread again and answered my own question. I forgot about mixing smaller batches in clear solo cups until I can come up with a better idea of working time. By time I get to under the bow I should have a good handle on it. Its a lot of foam up there so...
