Gathering Components for adding GPS to Older VHF

The VHF is a good unit. Have one on my boat as well. Don’t understand the need for a 12 to 5v adapter. Position is coming in from the plotter via the RCA connection

    Running spare hot wires....

Why would you have a problem if the wire isn't actually used, i.e. "Spare"? Either way, no problem if the the unit is properly grounded.....transducer cables are shielded. Just don't try pushing 220 VAC through the wire...lol

    Cup holders?

Good guess but not the correct answer.....won two all expense paid vacations to Sweden and one to Spokane WA on this very subject. You actually have two issues.... the machining and tooling process temporarily removes the materials protective oxide layer. The resulting contamination (oil, dirt...

Gathering Components for adding GPS to Older VHF

What GPS do you have? Scratching my head about the interface box. I see no reason for it. All your doing is adding a RCA connector to the TX and RX connections (bare wire) on the chart plotter. The wire(s) from the gps antenna go directly to the plotter as well.

    Cup holders?

What kind and size? I thought they where all pretty much the same size until I looked at replacing mine

Considering upgrading this season - prop exchange programs

Nothing but an excuse.....props don’t corrode sitting on shelves. Have used an unnamed on-line retailer twice when testing props. No problem returning as long as prop isn’t damaged

    Help me pick some batteries!

I run two, deep cycle batteries. Have one Interstate battery date code- 2001 and one Everstart (Wally World) battery date code-2000 Both pass load test in October but swapping out both this year as PM. Tempted to replace with the same but leaning towards swapping out for Deka Deep cycles...

    Leaking fiberglass livewell

Have a hard time believing water is leaking "thru" the glass. Usually the plumbing connections that leak.

Are these marine electronics worth anything anymore?

Museum value..... Raytheon has been out of business for years. Loran naviagtion support was decommissioned in the 80's.

    Outboard Painting

I've had acute zinc poisoning three times in my life. The first time I didn't know what was happening......cold chills when it's 90+ degrees outside. Emergency room the second time, hospitalized (not my choice) overnight the third time Back in the day..........cutting a municipal water tower...

    Voltage drop(s)

Troubleshooting a boot problem with the unit. It would start boot process then stop. Pretty obvious the boot sequence is waiting for something......times out then freezes. Display read 12V, gauge, battery, and connector at back of unit all at 12.7 Didn’t make sense unless the display was...

New to me '96 Evinrude 200, keep the VRO?

No need to remove air box. Fuel pump is in plain sight. The “old” (VRO) to “new” (OMS) change was in 1993. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

    Voltage drop(s)

Can’t speak for ECU but GPS/fish finders use internal power supplies to regulate and step down (+5v) the incoming current for use by the electronics. I asked tech support the same question a few years back. Asked them if the display voltage was raw or regulated. They didn’t know the answer...

    Voltage drop(s)

It would be interesting to see voltages with the batteries at “rest”. A lot of battery to be charged with 70A charging system if the DTS is drawing down your voltage, you have battery issues

Do these annodes look like they need to be replaced?

Yes and no. The driving force for corrosion is a potential difference between the different materials at the micro-structure level. People wrongly assume that "water" must be involved which isn't the case. An electrolyte will accelerate the issue but it is not the root "cause" of the problem...

    Fishfinder help...

As I noted above, side scan field of view is 2-3 times the depth. If the water is 3’ feet deep, the field of view is 6-9’ wide. You can go beyond 2-3x, but image quality suffers immensely. The price of electronics have dropped considerably over the past 10 years. There is nothing the old...
