    Nothing on key turn

And we were expected to guess beavers? Don't have any here in Florida. Seriously, glad you figured it out.

    1953 Evinrude 15hp 15012 water pump question

A "lean sneeze" is fuel igniting in the crankcase, usually due to carb's slow speed needle adjustment being too lean. During the sneeze the explosion in the crankcase causes a higher than normal pressure pulse in the crankcase. You see that high pressure pulse blowing out the disconnected fuel...

    1954 Johnson Water Flush Port

It is for flushing with fresh water after a run in salt water. Not necessary to have the motor running to do the flushing operation, but it MUST be in an upright position.

    Starter for a 1959 Johnson seahorse 35hp

I waded through the books, and come up with OMC 380239 and 386591 and ARCO 5376 and Sierra 18-5629 as fitting your motor. Also MAYBE ARCO 5712N. It all gets confusing because they replace so many models.

    Starter for a 1959 Johnson seahorse 35hp

Actually, a whole mess of motors 28-33-40 hp with similar mounting system will work Try looking for one of the newer, taller models. They are more powerful. But you should use the appropriate bottom support bracket with the taller ones

BTW I got that alternator installed on my 40 Rudy

That is an amazing job. Thanks for sharing. What is the intended application for the alternator?

    Totally normal.

    Johnson 20R72R

The interlock is located on the starboard side of the powerhead. You can see it move as you move the shifter handle. Looking at the upper end of the interlock, you can see how it limits throttle movement in neutral and reverse gears. If it won't start and run within the limitations, there is...

    Nothing on key turn

Surly you understand that power getting to the voltmeter is only half the story. It has to get back to the other side of the battery before it or anything else will work. Did anybody suggest cleaning the battery terminals? Especially the negative (ground) one. We are only guessing till you...

    Nothing on key turn

Did you do the first thing you should have done? That is CLEAN the battery terminals. Don't just shake and wiggle them, remove and CLEAN them shiny bright, then reinstall tightly. Then if it doesn't crank, proceed with some voltage checks.

    1953 Evinrude 15hp 15012 water pump question

You mean the two gaskets? As you surmised, the worst they can do is spray water out, not prevent pumping.

    1953 Evinrude 15hp 15012 water pump question

How deep did he have it in the water? Pump must be submerged. A pail doesn't get it.

    1970 60073D shutdown

If it stops from overheating at full speed, you will know it. It will be sitting there smoking while it burns all the paint off it. And likely be ready for lots of $$$$ or a trip to the scrap pile.

    1970 60073D shutdown

Yeah, it's electronic ignition----with breaker points to trigger it. Set points 0.009-0.010, very specific. It also has a silver reverse cut-out ring in there to prevent the engine from running backwards. And yes it can run backwards. Point is the ring is lubricated very sparingly with EP...

    1970 60073D shutdown

So, did you pull the flywheel and service the ignition?

    4HPs produced from '69-'76: Cooling -- Plugs -- Tuning

Notice the "bump" on the top of the flat exhaust cover on side of powerhead. There is a horizontal water passage behind that bump, with a small hole in about the middle of the horizontal passage. That is the most frequent obstruction point----if it is indeed obstructed.

    4HPs produced from '69-'76: Cooling -- Plugs -- Tuning

You wrote "Before installation of new impeller, forced water up water tube and observed it running back down the inside of leg from location other than water tube insertion point ---- but I could not see clearly where it was emitting. Was I observing water flowing through the cooling circuit or...

    Should I purchase a 60HP 1969 Johnson hydro-electric shift outboard motor?

I could find out if that motor will at least start, run, and shift without spending any money on it. Or at least diagnose why it won't start, run, and shift. No, Ill take that back, you'll have to fill the lower unit with oil to see if it will shift. But you can do that with cheap ATF oil...

    Should I purchase a 60HP 1969 Johnson hydro-electric shift outboard motor?

I thought you were on a $300 budget target. That is why I was trying to discourage you. If you are now considering $1000 or more, maybe it is worth taking a chance. If you are not thinking of spending the baby's milk money, that is.. It's still chancy, since you have a lot to learn. Good luck.

    Won't pump water when submerged

I would suspect exhaust or air is entering the water pump intake.
