    Evinrude or Johnson ??

You asked why. Because it has a thermostat-controlled recirculating cooling system. Water goes up one tube, through the powerhead, and is then presented to the thermostat. If the 'stat says it is not warm enough, the water goes back to the pump via the second tube for recirculation until warm...

    77 115hp no spark

I don't know what's wrong with the motor, but I do agree with one thing. As you said, you are missing something. It is just so unlikely that so many things are bad at the same time. But I suppose it is possible. Stuff happens, as they say.

Carb leaks from lower seal? What exactly does that mean? What lower seal?

    Evinrude or Johnson ??

WHOA!!! That is not a 1974 115hp, Johnson OR Evinrude. The 115 did not have a bubble-back exhaust cover. We are again right back to where we were. Look for the plug on the powerhead. Danged if I can see it from here.

    Evinrude or Johnson ??

The paint is so faded and flaking off, with the greenish primer shining through, that it's really hard to say absolutely. But if you really want to know, look for that serial number plug on the powerhead. By all that is right and holy, it should agree with the data plate you posted. Here's...

    Evinrude or Johnson ??

According to the tag, that is a 1974 Evinrude 115hp. And the pictures would seem to agree. The serial number J0005768 is an Evinrude serial number, and in those years does not indicate the year because unlike Johnson, Evinrude started over with serial numbers every year. BTW, the "J"...

    Leaking case halves/Crankcase

That lean sneezing you reported is when the fuel/air mixture explodes in the crankcase. I must say I'm impressed that you managed to be there at the right instant to get a picture of the "combustion/explosion/fire which goes out about as soon as it happens..

    Evinrude or Johnson ??

Look for a round disk plug on top of the port-side cylinder bank. It will have the serial number stamped on it.

    Wiring hook up under cowling

Grey tachometer wire customarily goes with the yellow/grey stripe wires on the terminal strip. Black would be grounded. Not sure where the purple connects on this model. Book says solenoid (?????)

When do you replace the fuel filter?

Not sure I've ever replaced one. Perhaps if it was gummed up with rotten gas.

Evinrude 3 hp Lightwin Cyliderhead/Piston question

I don't foresee any problem with your plans. The angled plugs are for hood clearance on newer models, but you appear to have plenty of room, either way. Piston and rings should interchange, no problem.

1957 big twin 35, electric start

Just crank it over with the plugs out to blow the liquid out, until most of it is out. You don't have to strive for 100% ejection. Yes, after it has blown out of the powerhead, it will drain out of the underwater exhaust in the lower unit and make a mess. There is another possibility here...

1957 big twin 35, electric start

Too much fluid in the "Lower powerhead"??? You mean the crankcase? Yes that is possible, I suppose. There is compression in a two-stroke crankcase. But I've never seen anybody do it.

Trying to imagine what in the world disintegrated and fell down. Perhaps the inner exhaust tube #49???

    Johnson v-4

1-2-3-4 from the top. That means #1 is highest on one bank, #2 is next down and on other bank, etc.

    1970s Evinrude Starflite 85hp

UM----"some" toggle switches??? How many is "some"? It is supposed to have one toggle switch below the key switch and the key switch does not push in. So...reading between the lines, that suggests that possibly the push button switch is shot ($$$$$$). The toggle below the key switch is the...

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Wait till you get hold of a few salt water motors. You will throw out all the mouse milk potions and get out the blue wrench (the oxy/acetylene torch). You gotta get it hot. Very hot. Very, very hot. Propane and mini torches don't get it.

    1953 Evinrude 15hp 15012 water pump question

If it isn't the simple stuff we've been mentioning, then you have to move on to less-common stuff. Like slow speed needle tip twisted off in the carb body. Or plugged idle ports (under the welsh plug). Or crankcase leaks (worn bearings or seals) Etc., ect. But check the simple stuff first.
