OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Yeah @racerone nailed it. I wonder of your upper unit is from a 400 as well. I would confirm exactly what you are working with before proceeding. Someone has swapped things out and didn't match it up properly. (Did they swap the whole drive or just the lower unit ????)

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

The pics I posted above show that in the 85 models the 3.8 , 5.0 and 5.7 all have the same lower unit (14:26) . It looks like the ratio change was done in the upper for the different engines. Or am I missing something ? Does anyone know if that is indeed the case for all years of omc...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Full disclose- these numbers are from an OEM 1985 manual. Idk if they are perfect for your model, but I would have to imagine they are close.

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Yeah , like Scott said , get the right ratio. I had to search and search for the right drive on mine when I did my conversion. Your upper unit will have a certain ratio , the lower unit will have a certain ratio. Combined together gives you the overall ratio. Try to get that overall ratio...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

what engine is in your boat ?

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Personally , if it were me I wouldnt worry about buying parts quite yet. That lower is probably grenaded to the point of no return. That crack/swelling on the case.... that case may not even be reusable. I would start looking for a good used lower in the same ratio . Slap it on and go boating...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Any play of that amount is bad news. Those are very tight tolerances on those gears and bearings...... Thousands of an inch . If its moving around that much I would suspect that pinion bearing or the gears themselves are shot. I am not sure what could even result in that much slop. I bet when...

How to launch stern drive safely?

Do yourself a favor as well. When you do get to that deeper water , don't hold the switch down.... don't slam it into the down position. Tap it down in bursts. The tilt motor is a royal pita to change and if you slam it down , you will break something eventually

    Diode Fix

Thats correct. Keep in mind that CDI electronics makes shift interrupters that are compatible with the pertronix . Then there is no splicing of your harness , you just hook the new module and go.

    Diode Fix

For the OMC / pertronix I'm assuming ? here is a quick diagram of how to wire that.

    Push/pull vs Tru course steering

I just converted from push pull steering on my boat to Tru course a few years ago. I was also doing an outdrive conversion at the time , so a little bit different. But I wanted Tru course mainly for safety. My push/pull set up was giving a good amount of feedback to the wheel. Imo the Tru...

    Burned Impeller

A good unscientific test that I use (and I'm sure I heard about here on iboats) .... is put your hands on the risers, they should be warm but not hot. That tells you at a minimum your impeller is pumping. It doesn't mean everything is perfect within the cooling system but it's good...

    3.8 water gushing from engine

I live in Utah and my local classifieds are littered every spring / summer with boats with cracked blocks.....sometimes nice ones too. Are there any rust trails that you can see from the general area ?

    Easy fix for voltage drop(?)

I had basically the same issue on my Ford. I did basically what Scott said and that fixed the issue. Clean all of these locations really good and I bet it fixes the problem. 1. Hot - battery to solenoid 2. Hot - solenoid to helm 3. Ground - battery to starter / block. I was going to run...

What's a Typical Idle Mixture Setting On A Marine Holley?

I dont know if this will be terribly relevant for reasons listed above but I went through this a couple years ago. I had a leaking power valve (running pig rich with idle mixture screws all the way in) I did a full rebuild on the 2 barrel. My settings ended up at a touch more than 1 , call...

    Spare Stern Drive

Get the info from the model tag and check the final ratio to make sure it's close to what's your ratio is. It took me probably 5 years of classifieds to find my drive. I converted from an electric shift to a mechanical shift on my stringer. IIRC my electric ratio was 1.51 and the other was...

    1976 OMC 190 FORD electrical

Before you go through the nightmare process of replacing the motor. Try removing the tilt quadrant gear from the outdrive first (3 bolts) That will allow the tilt motor to try to spin with no load on it and possibly free it up to get it working. cuz yeah , changing that motor sucks in a bad...

hooking up 4stroke kicker to existing fuel tank (starcraft islander)

If you can get a fuel separator with dual outlets working , that's a great setup. Many folks here use that with success. Mine is just an aftermarket Moeller separator . The main engine always worked just fine, the kicker side is where I had the problems. The kicker is only 5hp and doesn't have...

hooking up 4stroke kicker to existing fuel tank (starcraft islander)

I had this same question and situation come up in my boat. I tried one of those dual outlet fuel / water separators and my kicker kept sucking in air . IDK why that was happening since I have check valves for both engines, but it was. Even with a priming bulb , it would just pull air . So I...
