    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

I agree.....just want to know what the comp is now since it is "new".....so can compare later as I put hours on it.

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Update......Today I hit the key and she fired right up. After a 30 minute run on the hose I shut it off, let it cool down, then retorqued the head bolts, pulled the plugs and checked them.....then ran it again for 30 mins. Seems to be running very well so far. Just to be sure will check...

    Fouling spark plugs

The one recurring theme in this thread seems to be your low compression numbers.....lower by almost 20 percent across the board? It could be that your powerhead has seen better days, and no amount of tuning or parts changing will do any good if that is the case. Just something to consider or...

    Fouling spark plugs

" Surface gap plugs trolled for extended times will foul." Have found this to be true with mine.....however a short high rpm run will clear it up immediately. But it will troll just fine for as long as you can stand it. And I use the Champion L20V plugs. Even 4-stoke air-cooled airplane...

    Fouling spark plugs

Does a short run at higher rpms clear it up?

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Went ahead and tried out the heli coil kit I bought on that "hidden" bolt.....worked really well and put in a new SS bolt. LU is back on with new impeller and gasket.....will have to tweak on the gear shift rod a little to get it adjusted right, then see if she will fire up.

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Thanks Force P.....each switch would have it's own wire hooked into the terminal block for the overheat circuit. (orange). The old style switch uses an orange wire coming out of the harness....the new style has it's own wire that goes directly to the terminal block. Would this work? Even if...

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Ok.......now, what if you used both of them.....I realize that if one goes off and the other doesn't, then the buzzer won't come on. But if the buzzer comes on....then you have 2 separate switches telling you that it is getting too hot? Not a good idea? Just thinking out loud here......

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

My old PH used the thermo switch on the right, it screws in the cylinder head cover next to the top plug. The rebuilt PH came off a 1986 Force and had the one on the left, which was mounted in a special hole in the top left cylinder head and held in with a retainer clip with it's own wire that...

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Today I completed steps 1-6 of the link and sync.....the LU is off so couldn't try to start it yet......will be installing new water pump and repairing at least one stripped bolt hole, the seventh "hidden" bolt under the exhaust snout. Got a heli coil kit to fix it, and any others I find...

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

No, there was no rust on the key or flywheel.....the rebuilt PH taper and key slot looked good too. Franz recommended the lapping and checking to make sure the tapers were making good contact. Probably overkill but now I know it fits right. Might help to prevent a sheared key.

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Got the torque value, thanks. The lapping procedure is in the manual.....you draw 3 pencil lines 120* apart on the crank taper, then slide your flywheel on and with light pressure spin it around one time. Check the marks and see how much got rubbed away. The book says if 80 percent of the...

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Yesterday got the carbs mounted, choke set up, throttle tie bar on.....did the lapping procedure for the flywheel. At next opportunity will mount flywheel with new nut and torque it down. Finish installing fuel hoses then do the link and sync. Appreciate all the input so far. (y)

    force 120 hi reving issue

On my old powerhead the exhaust plate sprung a serious leak near the bottom......it had rotted from the inside and broke when I took it off. Luckily none of the bolts broke off. Not so lucky with the bypass cover.

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

I have the solid needles....they all looked good, no grooves or wear. The seats looked good to me. Washed/soaked the carb bodies in Simple green and water, then blasted them with carb cleaner spray and compressed air.

"Don't break it down any further." I was hoping you would say that Jerry....thanks. Found no crud in the bowls.....was surprisingly clean. Dirtiest part was the throttle and choke shutters....

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

My carbs are Tillotson WB21C.....newbie question.....my Chrysler manual gives good instructions for disassembly of these carbs but does not say anything about removing the main nozzle....just the main jet. I didn't see how to get it out of there either. My Seloc manual was no help. Does it...

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Thanks Winner....it's coming together. Today I worked on the carbs...first time I have done it myself. Should be done tomorrow. Called Franz today, had a question for him....he answered my questions then told me he was in the hospital recovering from double bypass and valve repair surgery...
