    Water in gear oil

No pics at the moment....but if you look at parts diagram at marineengine.com for 1978 Chrysler 85HP 857H8F engine....it show the drain plug and the other 2 up higher on the housing.....Fill and Vent. Part#31 for drain and #44 (2) for fill and vent.

    Water in gear oil

My drain plug is just a threaded plug...no way to use a seal or o-ring. I put some yellow teflon tape on the threads, seems to work well. The yellow is for natural gas, oil, etc. The Fill and Vent screws have the plastic washer type seals...

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Jerry, did u see my response in that other thread? Was asking about finding out why that bottom cylinder went bad.....it didn't get hot....that bottom port cover was leaking, causing lean condition....possible carb running lean....am thinking that by replacing the PH and rebuilding/cleaning the...

    Post your performance numbers

"Probably biggest thing we want to know is how much does it cost to get a PH rebuilt?" It really depends on what you want to do.....If I did my own work and just repaired the bottom cylinder only, looking at around $400-$600 for piston/boring/bearings, etc. This is based on my research online...

    Post your performance numbers

I hear you Jerry....It didn't get hot (have temp gauge and overheat buzzer) so I believe that bottom cylinder was running lean. Before it went south I had done the starter fluid test and found that the bottom port cover was leaking air, probably been like that for some time....and that could...

    Post your performance numbers

Thanks.....going with a rebuilt unit should be pretty straightforward. Probably could have rebuilt it myself but instead got one from somebody who knows what they are doing. Might try to rebuild my old PH later as a learning experience, or just scavenge parts off it if needed.

Just throwing this out there....was having similar WOT issues.....did the starting fluid test and found an air leak around the transfer port covers. Replaced the gaskets on all 3 and fixed my problem. Then 2 weeks ago was out and blew the powerhead....bottom cylinder is toast, but that is...

Why would the electrode on a spark plug get smashed

I use the L20V in mine....they will foul a little bit when trolling around but clear up with a good full throttle run. If your plugs are fouling that bad maybe running a little too rich....idk.

    Startup sneeze-1988 125hp

While chasing a high rpm problem on mine, did the starting fluid test and found an air leak problem with the port cover gaskets. Replaced them today and noticed that my cold start cough or sneeze is gone. It has been doing that for a long time....seems to be gone now. Still need to check it...
