    2020 9.9 CT engine stalls

In the boot of the car ? Or trunk if you are across the pond from me. My 3.5 merc used to take oil into the carb after a short journey in the car. Even if it was on it’s right side. Total pain.

4 stroke 9.9hp fires up then dies

Clean the carb out. You’ve probably taken oil into it from the sump

    165 MERCRUISER

You can. Seen it done. Can do it for pennies too, if you are clever. But not sure I’d bother and probably prefer gauges. If you need to though. You can buy cheap analogue to digital signal kit, then display on a ipad or whatever you like. They will only be as accurate as the analogue were though.

    Paragon to Velvet drive swap

Pretty sure you can have your wish of counter rotating set up. Those gearboxes can go anyway you like. Two normal LH engines can be made to go anyway you like at the prop end. All you need is a prop to suit.

    Oil leak 350 magnum 5.7

Hi. Thinking pessimistically, is the oil definitely not coming from a spillage when filling the engine through the filler hole on the rocker cover ? A messy fill, can often result in oil finding its way down into places that can alarm an owner and assume the worst. Anyway. That’s the best...

4 stroke 9.9hp fires up then dies

Take the carb off and clean it…inspect for oil…that’s came up and through from the sump. Can happen in storage or in the boot of the car unfortunately. An old mercury mechanic once told me years ago…that 99% of running issues on an outboard…are carb related.

Nerc 30 ELHPT Four Stroke Unattached Hose

Not familiar with that engine, but my same age merc engine (all be it larger), has a couple of features that may be related to yours. On mine, there is an sump oil drain pipe that goes down into a drain fitting on the mid section. I doubt it’s that, if it’s like mine..because the oil is...

    Time to chuck the 470

Agree. Been around since the late 70’s in that 3.0 140hp form. Still about with little changed over 4 decades later. Challenge anyone to suggest a more successful or numerous engine ever put in a boat. Can’t argue with their tried and tested story really.

    Time to chuck the 470

Yeah. Think it’s usually the go too engine, after the 3.7 gives in. For some reason…there were a a huge number of boats here fitted with these things, in the late 80’s. Fletcher boats in particular for a while. 99% of these boats now, have been engined with a 3.0 now. The guys that want the best...

    Time to chuck the 470

Yeah. Mount is the same too. Only know because of the earlier mentioned friends boat. The local merc guy sold him a new 3.0…it was installed and running same day dropped straight in, where the 3.7 came out. Identical mounts and all other fittings generally. Yeah. I get what you say about...

    Time to chuck the 470

No doubt the 4.3 be better all round. But all I was thinking is effort and cost versus the drop in 3.0. Especially if it’s free. The wee 3.0 will do just fine I’d think. Plenty of fairly heavy generic 17-19ft boats have them to be fair. Maxum, bayliner, searay, regal, and the rest. 135-140hp...

Same exhaust down pipe used too. Far as I know.

Volvo SX-M Trim Tilt Control Unit Problem

I’m not too familiar with that system at all to be fair. But I know that on my older VP you had to hold a tilt button then the trim to go behind a certain point. But sounds like you know that anyway. So about the trim limit. Again…not familiar with that one…but there is usually a potentiometer...

VP 4.3 winterization simplification .... sorta

I do exactly what you used to do with my mpi. I run the tank as low as I dare…then ad a bit of pre mixed fuel from a can, into the tank. Get evidence of the run through by smell and sometimes sight…then pull her out. I’ll stick to this method for sure. Not only does it get the oil through the...

Does anyone know where the fuse on a 1996 150 mercury offshore black max fuse is?

My older 150 black max has main fuse (that’s poorly conducting and can often stop it starting) on the starboard side of the engine (under the cover).

    Time to chuck the 470

Great word there. Love it Scott 😂. Think you’re mostly right there for 99% of pleasure boaters. I might be the exception perhaps. I use my wee outboard 19ft cuddy that frequently, should she not have a modern 4 stroke merc on her…and instead, have the inboard or older 2 stroke in/on her…jeez...
  17. Q

    Time to chuck the 470

Honestly now. The gear ratio isn’t an issue. Worst case…you’ll maybe just need to change the prop…if at all. What 3.0 is it you can get your hands on ? What kind of age is it ? Just check it over first perhaps. Look out for signs of a cracked block, from frost damage perhaps. Only thing that...

    Time to chuck the 470

I thought my 4.3’s were very good on fuel too. I’d imagine back in the day when a 4.3 producing 205hp in VP Aq205a form…was only a little short on power compared to the v8 AQ211…it would be possibly even preferable to that ?
  19. Q

    Time to chuck the 470

Fair comment Scott. I get you.

    Time to chuck the 470

Is the 4.3 to 5.0 maybe easier because you don’t been to change the engine mounts patterns? Or did you ?
