VP 5.7 Gxi hits rev limiter @ 4300

Ok. Strange one. So is it seeming as if it’s actually hitting an electronically governed limiter and cutting ignition at those rpms ? Could be that the tacho is just off the mark and it’s actually more like early 5000’s in reality. You can get a thing called Volvo Penta easy connect or something...

Merc 4.3 v6 distributor cap and cilinder connections

I’d say you likely would t have any rpms if it was trying to run backwards. So many things would be wrong if it was. If you have the LH dizzy, your low rpms would almost certainly be unrelated to this topic. I’d suspect you’d be looking elsewhere for your issue. Like fuel delivery and quality...

Merc 4.3 v6 distributor cap and cilinder connections

If it’s left hand…you’d be using a conventional set up and be 1-6-5-4-3-2 firing order and suited cap. If it was a RH cap..I don’t imagine it would run hardly at all.

Merc 4.3 v6 distributor cap and cilinder connections

Strange one I think though. If you had a RH cap on a LH engine it just wouldn’t work out well. Don’t think it would even start with the starter throwing it the opposite rotation. It would be running the wrong way if it did and not pumping oil and all sorts I’d think. Perhaps you have a RH...

Merc 4.3 v6 distributor cap and cilinder connections

Ok. Quite plain to see what’s going on after you posted these pics. So most normal LH rotation engines are 1-6-5-4-3-2 order. Looks like your cap if it’s pictures as being the same as the one on the right showing that cap, is telling me that is a RH reverse rotation part. They are 1-2-3-4-5-6...

Merc 4.3 v6 distributor cap and cilinder connections

If it was wrong, it might run…but you’d know all about it if was in the wrong order. Be very obvious and eventually detrimental. Follow the proper rotation firing order and defo replace that cap and rotor. It looks almost beyond use.

Merc 4.3 v6 distributor cap and cilinder connections

Scott is spot on. And that picture of it, if it’s your actual unit, suggests it’s well used too. The main king lead central node is just not looking too good at all. Is this your actual unit on your engine ? What 4.3 is it ? Is it a tks carb ?

    New 5.7 overheating

Would make me want to look at the PS cooler again. I think the last fella that suggested this was more thinking along the lines I am…and it maybe drawing air…rather than perhaps you maybe checking for it just being “clear”. Sorry if I picked you up wrong, if not. Quite a common thing for these...

    Merc 4.3

Long story short…anyone that suggests or tells you that engines like the 4.3 gm (or most other of the usual marine GM like 3.0, 5.0, 5.7 etc) just don’t have the first clue about it. The 4.3 engine is simply undeniably amongst the most successful, reliable test of time proven engine ever put in...

    oil leak on 3.0

Before going all in and drastic…have you ruled out all other possibilities like over spill from filling with oil and it finding its way to there ? Rocker cover gasket leak perhaps ? Oil over fill perhaps ? Just in case.

Merc 150 Intermittently Bogging Down at WOT

Did you check you’re not just hitting the rpm limiter ? Sure sounds like it. What rpms does it happen at ? My 2016 merc does exactly what you describe when I have less pitch on the prop. No audible warning. Just gets to it’s max…drops off the rpms…climb to max then same again.

Merc 350 mag mpi HELP! 200°

Hi. Assuming the engine isn’t original to the boat, looking at the lovely classic dash and gauges. Can I ask if when the new engine was fitted…was the alarm warning system fitted too ? Do you get a beep when the key is turned ? Likely a gauge issue, but thought I’d ask anyway.

    Smelly 2-Stroke

Few things come to mind Although, initially I presumed this engine was an early pre mix era engine and would be 100-1 mix…you say this is actually an oil injection model. This being the case…I’d say it’s normal for her to smoke a little when at low rpm or if the plugs are needing changed…I’d...

    Mercruiser greatly overpropped, need advice

Good news there. Much less pitch is next. Pretty convinced it’s just all as I’ve said above. Makes total sense to me that it is. Best of luck

VP 5.7 Gxi hits rev limiter @ 4300

Hi. Out with the likely explanation being the tacho being off the mark…it could be that you have one of many faults that can cause a 90% power guardian mode. But normally there is an alarm for such a thing I’d think.

Any tuners out there for Volvo Penta ECM's ???

I must admit, I thought these things had the same ecu as the mercruiser 8.1 mpi variant. I don’t know much about such things other than perhaps the questionable worth of the benefit it may result in, without being complimented with a supercharger kit. Whipple can remap these ecus I’m sure.

Dp 280 bent shaft or not.

You’re ok I’d say. Most common what you’re seeing is deflection as a result of a few things. Like prop casting tolerance, all the give there is in the prop assembly and also the back lash and float expected from it all in a condition with no load on the gearing and no float of oil amongst the...

    Mercruiser greatly overpropped, need advice

Can’t hurt doing a compression test…but still think it’s very obviously related to ratio and prop. That engine can be as healthy as new…but it still won’t turn a 19” through a 1.47 ratio to anything remotely close to its rpm range. Just impossible. A 5.7 260hp wouldn’t either. Not on that boat...

    Mercruiser greatly overpropped, need advice

Fair point Scott. But quite convinced the unusual gearing is a tall ask of that 5.0 carb in a 24ft boat. You’d know better than I perhaps, but suspect that wouldn’t ever have been a match from new ? Madness when you think about it really. Just knowing the circumstances and numbers from my 5.0...

    Mercruiser greatly overpropped, need advice

17 is worth a try. Give you a benchmark for reference for sure. Suspect that it might be beefing on a little much for all round use or if you’re heavy loaded perhaps. But will definitely be a worth while exercise for sure. If nothing else. Yeah, I’d think that 1.47 gearing would be considered a...
