    Ford 302 pinging

I think they all have a tendency for the fuel to dry up over time. Back when all our cars had carbs, we liked them or hated them partly based on how well they started when cold, if you live in a climate that gets real winter.

    Ford 302 pinging

Not exactly... old school carbed engines in an auto application used an auto choke and a fast idle system, that allowed the engine to keep running on the choke, it needs like 1500 rpm to keep running when cold. In an auto application this happens automatically but in a marine application an...

Even with that big OMC style thermostat housing? I think they used the 4160 with the side mount fuel inlet on the 4.3s because of that. I don’t think a front fuel inlet Holley will fit on the 4.3s. Not sure with those old Buicks haven’t seen one in years.

Can a old mercruiser motor run very well with following pressures?

Was that a cold or hot compression test? For it to be accurate the engine should be warmed up & throttle wide open. Is this a 4.3 V6 or the old in-line 6?

    Priming a Rebuild Engine

It was about the same as what I've seen by taking off the oil cap with engine running, so it appeared fine to me....what I'd consider enough. Yes when I cranked it over 2 times for 10 sec each my oil pressure gauge went right up to 40 so that was good enough for me. When I started it after the...

You know Bruce I've been trying to find that out but never could find a PDS listing what the base composition is. I do know that the Evinrude wheel bearing grease (different product) uses an aluminum complex base. I've been using the Lucas Marine grease in trailer wheel bearings and the I/O...

    Ford 302 pinging

4150 has the advantage of 4 corner idle adjustment, external float adjustment and fuel level sight plugs but with the fuel inlets on both bowls it is a good bit longer than the 4160 with the side fuel inlet. Don't think it would fit on a 4.3 but on a Ford 302 it shouldn't be a problem.

    Ford 302 pinging

agreed even my little 4.3 benefited from the Rochester 4bbl...Holley has both 2bbl and 4bbl carbs already calibrated for the Ford 302, I'd make a decision about 2 vs 4 bbl and use one of those. Of course if you want to move up to the 4bbl you have to find a good intake for the 302. If you have...

And you can buy a Holley Marine 2 bbl carb brand new; better than remanufactured which is what you’ll get from Flying Fish Carbs. Yeah new costs more…. 0-80320-1 I believe is the # of the Holley 2 bbl calibrated for the 302 cu in Ford.

Well... there used to be an excellent anti fouling paint for aluminum (TBT) that was outlawed about 15 years ago...except...for government use....those alu Coast Guard boats can use it....the rest of us, have to deal with Trilux II on the outdrive which is fair but not great. So we don't all...

What do I check next on overheating issue?

This varies by engine & cooling system design but I have found that the area right under the thermostat housing reads the closest to the temp gauge, usually about 15 or so degrees less than the gauge. My engine has a 160 stat and it runs from a little under 160 to at most 175 after coming off...

What do I check next on overheating issue?

If you're overheating when idling & at higher speeds but not at moderate revs, that points to low raw water flow, if you have a new impeller, did you change the housing and wear plate as well? The housing ususally doesn't need to be replaced unless the plastic was distorted from a bad overheat...

5.7 Vortec dist, trying to seal the cap/rotor due to constant corrosion. Merc 350 Mag MPI Horizon.

Ah ok that explains it. Salt water is tough on inboards due to the materials used. Too bad you can’t keep it out of the bilge and have it exit overboard via scuppers. If your boat does have scuppers maybe you can build a dam to force it to divert around the engine bilge & out the scuppers. I’d...

5.7 Vortec dist, trying to seal the cap/rotor due to constant corrosion. Merc 350 Mag MPI Horizon.

You should not be getting salt water in the bilge only fresh water from rain. If salt water is getting in around the transom mount somehow that’s going to cause a lot of other corrosion damage.

4.3 dying when putting it in gear

If yours is stalling going into gear, then the engine is not taking the load from the turning the driveshaft, that's more likely to be an ignition/carburation issue. Unless, due to some other adjustment issue, your interrupt is engaging when it shouldn't. I'm not familiar with the Merc sytem so...
