    looking at a 1990 thompson 260 fisherman

Smart move, hate to bring bad news, but just trying to save you some serious headaches down the road. Older glass boats are sun catchers for first time boat owners, can be pretty but often a pile of junk someone is trying to unload. Someone that has really maintained their boat and motor will...

    1975 Johnson 70hp

I would use Sea Foam instead of carb cleaner, SF has oil in it along with crud cutters and won't strip oil off critical parts.

Owner should be willing to show and prove the hull is dry, if not walk away and find one that will prove his hull is good.

    1992 Mercury 100 HP 2 Stroke Starving?

Fuel stabilizer should be added with each filling when only being used ocassionally. Gonna bet you have some poor fuel issues. I would start with a tank of fresh treated fuel !

    1992 Mercury 100 HP 2 Stroke Starving?

Poster mentioned he had not added any fuel in some time, so...is the tank contaminated with water ? Does the owner add any fuel stabilizer to his fuel ? No matter how the boat is stored, the rubber hoses have a limited life expectancy and need replaced at least every 10 years or sooner. Boat...

Test some on the trash bag first to be sure the foam doesn't dissolve the trash bag.

    aluminum prop comparison

Then that would indicate you are under propped ( less pitch than needed) but....until we have exact numbers any recommendation would be just a guess. Serious boaters realize guesses cost us money in the long run..

I used that as a magic trick whenever we had kids on board. Find that sweet spot and the boat would go left then right all while I had my hands in my pockets !! Kids and adults always got a kick out of my magic steering..

Draining gas tank questions -- Is this thing a vent? How does my tank look in general?

I bought a small 12v electric fuel pump off Amazon for 20 bucks shipped. Mounted it on a board to pump out various fuel tanks on my toys. I added a four foot long suction hose and slide it down the fill neck to get the fuel out . Works like a charm, I have 5' long leads with clips to keep any...

    aluminum prop comparison

If your engine is not capable of reaching its max wot rpm, then it is lugging down, using more fuel than necessary and putting excess load on the motor. Whether you run wot or not, having the proper pitch means your good thru all the rpm range, not just wot.

    How do you trim?

Most boat owners are not using their boats every day, so it becomes a new experience every time they use it.

I always try comming in at an angle rather than straight in. Much easier to plan for wind and current ! Doesn't t take much wind or current to make our light weight tinnes move alot....

1955 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5hp carb kit?

Why would a dirty carb keep the shifter from going into gear ? How fast is the idle speed when shifting ??? Should be around 600 rpm....

Not all of us are privy to a nice wind free launch ramp. Most in my area create a wind battle every time. Having reverse is like having a brake pedal, use it wisely !

    Can You Wear This Shirt

Me as well, my handbook belonged to my father, passed down to my older brother, who passed away at an early age. Then it became mine. Even more important than the book itself, is all the notes and shortcuts entered by my father and brother on all those blank pages. A treasure of information...

    aluminum prop comparison

All your numbers mean nothing without knowing the max rpm rating on your motor and the current max rpm of each different prop at wot. Numbers need to be accurate, not estimates. Even before that, is the engine running at its peak ? Mounted the right height and properly trimmed to get the...

Trailer bearing blowout. Need help with repair(s)

Check your area and see if you have a local machine/ fabrication shop in your area. They often do side work to keep their people busy when things are slow. Before I retired, the shop I worked at often took in "farmer" jobs to help the local community and the people in it. You might have to...
