    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

I like these, for classic cars and boats...when you understand these, you will never be stuck for the lack of an NLA part....no modules here, no $600 fuel pumps, etc. Downside, they don't run "perfect" after a cold start....that's it.

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

OK I’ll say it: Technology is not really your friend It’s like living with your parents till you’re 40 You never learn! Drivers are less capable than they were when I started driving in the early 1970s. Both in driving skill and mechanical knowledge. If you can’t check oil, change a tire, or...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

What were the scariest words you could hear according to Ronald Regan? “I’m from the government and I’m here to help” Unelected bureaucrats have run wild and created this outt of control regulation and ever escalating costs. State legislators thinking to adopt California emissions (why is that...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

Somehow, we got everywhere we had to go with simple engines with points distributors and carburetors and 3 speed automatics. Those cars, now, can still be restored. Today's cars, forget about it. Same reason why I kept my old boat. Simplicity, low cost of parts, ease of repair....

That spark plug suggests an underperforming ignition system or too rich fuel mix….

Need to remove pulpit on 1999 Chaparral 290

I wouldn't do it. That nice boat will look butchered up! Too hard to make it look like it didn't come with the pulpit....

Latest new car racket to cause you to by a car.

that's the Japanese government's little plan to make sure that their OEMs never go out of business! otherwise known as the Sha-Ken where you can fail for the most minor things imaginable. Ironic, isn't it? Japanese cars are generally the longest lived but Japanese can't enjoy it themselves!

Latest new car racket to cause you to by a car.

Just for information, I perused some Toyota parts catalogs on line to see how much is available for older 4Runners. What I found was that it appears that a lot is available for ones as old as 15 years old, but their prices tend to be quite a bit higher than the domestics, perhaps that's the cost...

Latest new car racket to cause you to by a car.

the simpler your vehicle, the longer you can theoretically keep it going. Modern vehicles, I think 10 years you can get parts, after that, it gets difficult. Ironically certain parts are easier to find for my old '98 Jeep than for my '07 Jeep, maybe because the '98 has a lot of common parts...

Aftermarket Mercruiser parts, What are you using???

Agreed with a bellows job, for one thing it's not that much fun to do, for another, if it leaks, even less fun. I have shelves of OMC Cobra spares for this reason, I buy what I think I'll need, but sometimes don't need it as soon as I thought lol!

Steering hose to steering actuator - compression or o'ring

They shouid last longer than that! I would only use a non pitted cylinder that’s probably the cause of leaks. I installed a used old style OMC/Merc unit 4 years ago and no leaks. These are different though than the later style used by OMC/Volvo & Merc. The control valves can be rebuilt but the...

Steering hose to steering actuator - compression or o'ring

The end with the O ring looks just like the ones used on trim rams.

    Surge Brake replacement parts

If I ever started towing it long distances yes, I would put on a pair of either Kodaik or Dee Maxx 12" discs, I do like the ease of working on them, as we all know working on drums can be a pain, but I really haven't had much trouble. Even if I towed it to Montauk L.I. (known as The End) it...

Aftermarket Mercruiser parts, What are you using???

Exactly! The OEM Cobra bellows last 10 years easily in my experience I would think Merc is just as good. Last time I did mine was in 2016 and no cracks in the folds yet… but as soon as I see them it gets changed…

Aftermarket Mercruiser parts, What are you using???

Agreed, even though I have an OMC and can't just get parts down the street like Merc, I have OEM spares on hand for things like that, bellows, impeller, I have found that when comparing, things like the distributor and points and condenser sets are better quality when OEM vs Sierra. Will use...

    Surge Brake replacement parts

Their disc brakes were terrible that’s why I went with drums when I put brakes on this trailer back in 2004. But as I said the coupler still works fine. The hill I have to go down to get to the ramp is so steep trust me you’d know if it wasn’t working.

Winterizing, use E-0 stabilized gas or install shut off valve and run carb out of fuel?

I'm going to agree with that, I think EFI in my vehicles has been excellent, I don't think I have had to fix any aspect of the EFI system on any vehicle I have had and I am counting a 27 year old Grand Cherokee 4.0 in that mix, all that ever needed was a cleaning of the idle air valve now and...

Winterizing, use E-0 stabilized gas or install shut off valve and run carb out of fuel?

So you're saying shutting off the fuel will stress the seals in the pump I guess....in that case, I'll just use the outboard tank I have that I used for testing the fuel system (another story) but fill it with E0 gas that's stabilized. There is one station around here that sells it, expensive...
