    Easy for me to say.---I have all the parts needed for these.------If I was looking at that motor to be a forever keeper I would do this.-----Take powerhead apart and lower unit apart for inspection.-----Then you would know what you have.----Just finished putting new pistons / rings in a 1974...

    Agreed----The battery is used to crank the motor over.-----The spinning flywheel generates the spark.---The battery has nothing to do with making spark for the plugs !!

    ???-----Look at pictures of these parts.----Clutch dog and gears have lobes and must be turning for proper engagement !!----When you become familiar with these parts the repair work becomes easier.----Sorry to be blunt here.

    You will likely find a control box on E-bay.----Plus anything else you would need.---But evaluate this boat for rotten transom / stringers.------And evaluate this motor top to bottom before spending any beer tokens on this project.

    If it is the motor built by Johson / Evinrude then about 7 screws need to be removed.----A few hoses,-----Then the engine block lifts off.----Not hard at all.

    Agreed the bend has to be there.----Stop and listen.----Perhaps spread the connecter with screwdriver so that rod goes in easier.----Read post #10 and #12.----Those are the facts and not wild guesses on my part.-----I own numerous examples pf these wonderful motors for parts / rebuilding !

    Post the compression values.----These motors do not have temperature warning horn as far as I know.

    Posting a picture would help.----But I say you have to remove the powerhead to undo 2 nuts at the top of the shift rod.----Actually quite easy.

    Depending on how long you ran it ( possibly dry ) the impeller may be damaged.----Very important to have a good impeller in that motor !---Easy to pull apart to check it.

    Water must be 8" above the impeller for testing in a bucket.

    But you must line up the notch with the hole before you put the bolt in !!----And most out boards need to be running for proper shifting.----Or on a stand you need to turn the propshaft when shifting.-----Get this right or you will be spending beer tokens on parts !!

    You operate the shift handle to push the rod DOWN all the way.----You pull the lower rod all the way UP , while turning the prop.-----This give you ample room for tools to connect up the shift rod.-----When it is together it will shift correctly !!

    The water tube must be installed into the midsection first.-----Flywheel must be turned slowly while pushing lower unit up.----Shift rod notch must be lined up with the hole before putting the bolt in.

    Make sure you get plug wire with a METAL CORE .---Available at most marine shops.

    Outboard motors need a new impeller if you do not know how old it is.----And a new one about every 5 years or so.
