    Points are set to open at the correct time relative to the rotation of the flywheel magnets.----That has to be to generate the spark.----Timing of spark relative to piston TDC is automatic.

    Does spark jump a gap of at least 1/4", yes or no ?----Reed valves do not get stuck on these motors.---Agreed pull the flywheel and check the coil.----They are often cracked / burned through to magneto plate.

    This particular o-ring is used in many applications including motors in 2011 and even newer.----I should look this # up in an " old time paper " parts book.

    Stop.-----Get the correct o-ring.----It should slide easily onto the bearing.----No o-ring needed on the top bearing.---You are replacing the o-ring inside the carbon ring ( mechanical seal ) I hope ?----Make sure you get the bearings seated on the dowel pins.

    I do not believe the o-ring fits in a groove on the bearing !!----Fits in a groove on the block.

    Why not get into an electric outboard.-----Just need to know how to push a button.-------The EV world is upon us.------But I read an article that EV's may be banned on some ferries in Europe.----Perhaps the tunnels in the mountains will be next.-----These things are an extreme fire hazard.

    Wait a minute-----The part you refer to as a " silly throttle pinion " was used in 1955 and also used in 1985 production.--So factory installed over 30 years or so.------Used on 5.5 hp / 7.5 hp / 10 hp / 18 hp / 25 hp / 28 hp / 33 hp / 40 hp motor.-----There is nothing wrong with this part...

    1988 35hp - Multiple issues

    Drill a hole in skeg.----Use Mercury lifting tool in flywheel.---Anchor motor to a post or tree.---Attach chain to the drilled hole.-----Pull the lower unit off with comealong / chainfall / pickup truck.

    I believe the helicoil was installed wrong !!-----A new sealing surface would have to match the way the drain screw goes in at an angle.-----Remove helicoil.----Weld it all up.-----Remachine to factory new, is one option.

    Not hard to find the correct wire at all.-----And you need to put the new wire into the coil before the coil is set in place.----And the coils must be set it the correct place for proper clearance with magnets.

    I can not see or hear your motor !!-----Take plugs out.----Crank it over.-----Do you hear the ---" poofff / poofff / poofff ----That would be crankcase compression.----Or remove carburetors and inspect the reed valves.-----All easy to do.

    To me it appears that a helicoil was installed.----Done poorly ( crooked ?) perhaps.-----Myself I would replace the housing.----Easy for me to say as housings are easy to find here.
