    The older cylinder head can be put on a 1992 model or an older powerhead could be installed.-----All pretty simple to figure out when motor is on my work bench.-----The model # in post # 13 is a 1992.

    1986 Johnson 185 difference

    It can be difficult and frustrating to explain.----The 185 was marketed in 84 and 85.----But really it was the same motor as the 3.500" bore 200 HP ( crank rated ) in 1983 and earlier.------But it was rated 185 at the prop !!!!

    Correct----There is a " club fisted " presenter on you tube taking a V-4 engine apart.----Trying to take the tapered dowels out in the wrong direction , then using a bigger hammer.---Then saw another video where he was again puzzled by these simple dowels.----Worthless videos I say.

    The kill switch arrangement was used on the 91 and 92 model of the " old style " 9.9 / 15 OMC .

    ?---Put it in gear and block of wood on the propeller should do the trick.

    That would be the starboard cylinder head #1 and #3 cylinder.----That is correct.----Make sure the water diverters / guides are in good shape.-----Those hose " thingys " in the water jackets.----Most of those gaskets would have a arrow on them.

    What is this hose for?

    Look for and find a nipple on the bottom of the airbox that fits in front of the carburetors.-----That is where it goes and it is there to drain any fuel that might spill from carburetors.----Think safety.

    Stop.----What manual do you have ??-----The tab on both sides is at the top and toward the outside of the block.----The arrows point to each other or to the exhaust passage way.-----Make 110% sure you get these gaskets on correctly.

    How can ---" non burning fuel " ----pool at the rear of the combustion chamber ?????-----These statement are just a mystery to me.----Can you explain where this pooling might occur in some detail.----In the cylinder itself or crankcase ??

    When they bend thin material like that there are " stress risers " at the bend.---------Any flexing on aluminum often results in cracks like that.

    The throttle cable pushes to speed up the motor.----The shift cable pulls the shift lever to go into forward.----Why are you doing this ?-----Controls and cables last a long time.----What make of control are you installing ?

    Are you 100% sure the 185 is the same year ?-----Do you have the model numbers.-------I believe you are looking at the 1985 model 185 HP.-------And you may be have a GT 175 which is the same block / bore ( 3.625" ) as the older 235 HP rated at the prop.-----And the 185 might well be the same as...

    Parts today are precision made.----Compression does NOT vary that much on a " good condition " motor.--My tester on a 49 cube 3 cylinder would show 135 + PSI.----I say pull the head , simple and a head gasket is really cheap for the learning you get.
