    If it is a 33 HP it is a 1965 ./ 1966 model ----1967 to 1970 models were green.-----It was clearly stated that this motor does not have a thermostat.----Try it with more water in your test bucket.----These pumps are not self priming !-----Perhaps someone put a 1967 tag on it.-----Post pictures...

    tbshur----There is no thermostat on that model of motor !!!!!------And most OMC motors will pee right after startup.----Thermostat does not come into the picture !

    Now that you have it apart hopefully you are installing a new impeller.-----And every 5 years from now.-----These motors do not have an overheat warning or a shutdown system.----It would run until you notice it slowing down and coming to an expensive " dynamic halt ".

    Well----The 1967 models were green , so what is your model # on this very fine motor?------Have to ask.----Is the water in you test bucket at least 8" above the impeller ?----A very important fact / question.------And no , there is no need for all the air to come out that port either.------Relax...

    I can't believe the over engineering on these throttle handles.----All done to make it more efficient on the assembly line.------No regard to future repairs.-----I would go to an electrical supply store and install a simple toggle switch on the lower cowling.

    You say you just bought this 37 year old motor.------Step # 1 is to determine why it might be bogging.-----You can do the mythical " sink and link " all day long and it won't help a motor in poor condition !!----Post you compression values , they should be 135 PSI or more to be called GOOD.

    If your funds are limited for a new boat like that ( $30,000 + ) then you have the opportunity to make this project so that the grand kids will enjoy it.-----New boats may have the same shoddy materials hidden by fancy carpeting.--------Look into composite materials for this project.

    The thermostat normally fails in the open position.------Missing because folks simply do not know how important that part is.-----And a very common thermostat that was used for many years from about 1960 to 1998 in some motors.

    Perhaps your local machine shop can machine away the corroded material for say 1/2 " ( 12 mm ) and then shrink on an aluminum ring.----I would do that if I was stuck for a block to use.----Have a bunch here but you are too far away , across oceans.
