    I have always made sure fuel tank has gas and fuel/water separator is full of GAS. This helps fuel pump prime lines, carburetor bowl, etc. Then, I would squirt some gas into carb and have buddy crank engine. Have large rag or fire extinguisher nearby incase carb leaks or motor backfires.

    Most have trim electrical restrictors prohibiting cranking if OD is up past a certain point. Make sure those are fixed and working 100%.

    Flooded in salt water? How long? You may need drive too. If shifter keyway is straight, it should pull off. Spline may have rusted inside coupler???
