Well, finished grinding for now. The thing is the glass is so beaten up and cracked that the only thing left of the boat would be the gelcode when I would be trough with it. I grinded all the soft spots off the front part but only 1 ft off the rear part so it would held shape while I build the mold and put the first layers of fiberglass on it.
This is where I am now:

I found some old repairs that I have to sort out later on

I cleaned every thing with water, now I?m gonna let it dry for a few days while I build a wood frame under it.

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

here are some of the tools I have been using:

I used this grinding disc to take the paint off.

and a few of these:

and then I finished with a 36 grid sanding disc

I used an milwaukee adjustable speed grinder.

And I bought this straight line sander last week, to use on the later stages on this project....

Did you say you're going in the ocean in this boat? Wow, you are a braver man than me. Even at 151/2 to 16 feet, I would never take that chance with a boat that was in two (or more) pieces in my garage.

I see you like quotations so don't forget the famous "Stupid is as stupid does"- Mama Gump

Good Luck with your project and by all means be safe.

I usually don?t go far out when I go fishing, usually around 5-15 miles. There are some great fishing spots in the area.
I also always wear one of these when I go on my zodiac. And I also have few life vests I will be keeping in the boat.

I can?t say I?m a big fan of Murphy, but I am very aware of his laws :)

This boat has been in sea many times and so far so good, except once when the original windscreen go lost :drama:
then the boat had 75 hp outboard on it and 16 yo son of the owner trying it out for the first time, it flipped over and the windscreen broke off..

If I would not believe I could do this well and strong enough I would never have started this project.

I almost finished the wood frame to support the boat today, just a little adjustment left. Then I?m going to build the mold over this weekend and hopefully start laying some glass :).
Pics when the mold is ready.....

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

Well, I finished laying down the first layers of glass few weeks ago, than I had to take the boat out of the garage and of course Murphy showed up, crazy weather and the boat flew on ( and then over) my car, and into a light pole. I took some big rocks an put in the boat to keep it from going any farther. It worked but It is all f**** up, alot of cracked glass since I?we only put 3 layers on it before I moved it . Cause the base that I built under the boat was strong I thought it would be all right for moving but I was not expecting ragnar?k. I have finished fixing the dents it made on my car so I?m gonna put the boat back in the garage next week and start cutting the cracked glass away. So back to square 1 for me...... :moody:

Got the boat in the garage just now. The damages are not as big as I thought but still 2-3 days of work to get me to the point I was at. So, I?ll start setting the support frame back up tomorrow. Can?t wait to get working on it :joyous:

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

I have about 20 liters of gel code that a friend gave me. My question is since the whole thing will be painted should I bother with gel coding it first and paint over the gel code or should I just paint it?
I will be using a epoxy primer and Polyurethane paint.

Regarding the gel "coat", I am not an expert, but I think you either use gel coat, or paint but not both. You can paint fiberglass or alum. boats, but I think gel coat only is used on fiberglass boats. It's time to share some pictures of the stretch project, we are needing visual effects here in the states, 1/2 of us are buried under 1-2 feet of snow~!

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

I started glassing yesterday. :triumphant:
Put down 4 layers of mat on the hull yesterday and tonight so things are happening.
I made a form from 316 metal at work today for the stringers and I?m gonna glass them one at a time in the next days. It?s so great to see things actually move forwards after all the grinding. If I will ever build / totally restore a boat again it it wont be untill my sons will be old enough to use grinders
