Re: 1957 Evinrude Fastwin 18HP Hopeful Resurrection

So after replacing the seals on the pressure tank line plug, I was able to try and test run my work.

It didn't run. Well only if I sprayed some mix in the carb. Took the carb off and inspected all the rebuild work. Blew air through it, checked the float, everything looked good. Stuck it back on, tried again and same result.

Tank has great pressure and runs a different motor, 90+ compression, good spark, breakers at .020, needles at 3/4 and 1 1/2 turns out.

I'm pretty sure I have a carb issue. What am I missing?

Did you replace the fuel lines from the connector to the filter bowl, carb and manifold? Clean the sediment filter and bowl? Sure sounds like you're not getting fuel and you've ruled out the tank, tank hose and connector. Is the fuel fresh?

By the way, 'm working on this same motor (57 Fastwin) right now. Traded an old snowblower for it a few weeks ago. I'm just waiting on one more part (a prop seal) and I'll be attempting to get it running soon too.

Seals are enroute!

one quick check, fuel wise, is to pull the plugs and ground the leads...pull the choke on and cover each sparkplug hole with a shop towel..pull the starter through a few times and examine the shop towels for fuel saturation

Is the filter bowl filling with fuel?

Yes and the carb bowl

Spray some gas fuelmix directly into both cylinders and it should fire. You say compression is at 95??If thats correct then its pretty low.the compression dhould be at least 110 on that particular engine. Are you sure the compression gauge is accurate?aLSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD SPARK.

I did spray in mix and it runs, has good spark,

All new lines , cleaned the bowl and filter. Before spraying mix in I pulled the plugs and they looked very dry. Fuel is fresh and runs another motor.

I will try this, I think it is starvation. Float seems to operate correctly.

Time to look at the carb again.

Yeah. Gotta be a blocked passage or stuck float valve. You're ruled out everything else. Are the high and low speed needles in good shape? What kind of spark plugs are you using?

Plugs are J6C, gap at 30 , needles look good, float and float valve are new.

I might throw on a different carb and see what happens. I have a match off a different 18.

Great idea. You've got me stumped.

She fired right up with the different carb. Ran pretty good after fiddling with the adjusts, but it didn't seem to idle down really slow. This carb was a donor so I don't know if and when it was ever rebuilt.

I went over my rebuilt carb and it had some junk come of of the slow speed feed on the upper half. I'll be putting the rebuilt carb back on and see what happens.

I also found that the seal on the shift handle is leaking pretty bad, so the head will be coming off for replacing the seal.

Great. Good that you had the donor carb to test it. I had the same thing happen on my fleetwin with a leak at the shifter.

Cleaned my carb and replace the shift shaft seal. Did a tank test today.

I was happy with the tank test. That is until I got the lower unit back out of the water.

I discovered I will be rebuilding the lower unit, it has a pretty bad leak somewhere.

The good news is I'll have a fully rebuilt motor when I get this done.

Good job on the motor. Yea, the lower unit typically will leak at the shift rod, or the upper seal. Prop seals are pretty tough and aren't quite as likely to leak, unless they get fishing line wrapped up on the shaft. This will usually tear them up though. So, yea, like kfa stated, a $25 re-seal kit will do it great justice.

kfa & Zeph, She did run very nice if I do say so myself. Thanks guys.

Yea I look forward to my 1st lower end rebuild.

I might practice on a 10hp that needs the same thing.

Sounds great Osby. Wish I could say the same about mine. I'm exactly where you were two days ago. Had mine in the tank tonight but it doesn't seem to be getting any fuel. I have spark and it sputtered after spraying some fuel into the cylinders but nothin'. Good tank and fuel that runs another motor, rebuilt carb, new fuel lines. cleaned filter and bowl. Guess I'll be pulling the carb apart again. Nuts.

Oldy, I'm pretty sure I had some junk in my fuel line from the tank to the engine, it made it to the carb and plugged it up, found some junk in the fuel bowl. Second time was a charm, hope it is for you to. Thanks again for the LU info.

You might want to talk to F_R about one of his shift rod seal removal tools. It makes the lower end reseal an easier task.

Took the seals out of the lower unit.

The drive shaft seal came out with channel locks, a screw driver and a hammer. Used the channel locks inverted and wide open to pry up the edge of the seal. I then lightly tapped around the seal edge with a screwdriver and hammer. Then used the channel locks to grip the edge and pull out the seal. Took no more then 10 minutes.

I made a shift rod seal remover out of a 4 1/2" 5/16 bolt, the threads are about 1" and were ground off and two sides of the head were ground down to allow the bolt head to fit in the casing. I inserted and used another piece of threaded rod to tap out the seal.

Took about 1/2 hour to do everything. It helps to have a site like iboats, where the resources and people are fantastic.:)

Well I finally made a little time and got the LU back together and attached. Very easy work. Thanks for the seals High Trim.

Have to relocate my pump and put some fluid in and give it another test run.

Can't wait to get that on the boat and see how she flies.
