Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

A little more work done. I've been trying to get all the low spots faired in the hull, and I THINK I've got most of them. I'm sure a few more will show up after I've primed it.

I also got the bottom of the deck painted-

Now that the repairs are done on the bottom side, and it's all painted, it's time to flip it back over so I Can finish sanding, do some repairs here and there, and then get it ready for primer. Having the Gantry available for this kind of work makes it TOO easy-

Put some straps somewhere near the center, where the lift will be balanced, and LIFT-

Then, Flip it on the side- When it's balanced, it's super easy to do-

The weight of the deck is still on the strap/hoist...

Flip the strap over, and start lowering-

And, drop it back on to the work stand-

Then back to the 'hole' so I can work on it-

That took about 10 minutes total, working alone. SO much easier than any other method I've used. That is one of the best tool investments I've ever made!

Now- I get to start sanding again! Can you hear the excitement in my voice ??

Nice to see such a funky old classic get restored. And your pics are great. Some of the best I've yet seen here. Not having to click on each pic makes following the thread very easy. Well done.
One question. Seeing as some of the stringers are patched, is there any worry about flexing at those joints when the hull starts to flex?

The bad portions of the stringers were removed, and the new portions were installed with scarf joints that will make them pretty much as strong as the originals. They were all epoxied, and then glassed over... They should be PLENTY strong.

It feels like it :)

It is a LOT easier than how I used to do it, and it makes pulling motors a BREEZE :)

I missed that. I guess if you used dowels through the scarf joints they should be plenty strong.

It looks and feels like you've turned the corner. Time to start painting and putting everything back in one piece. I can't wait to see how she comes together.

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

Sanding work on the hull is now ALMOST done.... I had to do three 'passes' with filler- Every time I sanded it all down, I found more spots here and there that needed attention. I THINK I've got it all done now, though. One drawback to using an epoxy filler like I am is the cure time- It takes about 12 hours to be fully set in these relatively low temps, even with the fast hardener. But, I've got it on hand, so I can save some money that way! One other thing that's kind of nice is that I get a LONG pot life, so I can take my time.

If I could get it easily here, I'd probably be using 3-M premium filler... It's nice stuff, vinylester based, and cures a LOT faster. I probably could have ordered it if I'd have been thinking ahead, but didn't. So I'll use what I've got. I can't get much in the way of boat stuff locally, which amazes me since there are so many boats!

I am almost at the primer stage now. I'll be ordering primer in the very near future, along with the hull paint. I am still trying to decide on a color for the hull- Originally, it would have been a pure white, but I had been thinking about a slightly off white color... I'm still not too sure. I am, however, looking FORWARD to having the filling work done, so I can move on to the paint. Yes, there is still a LOT of sanding to do in the future- Once I prime, I'll have to sand AGAIN, and once I paint I'll have to sand AGAIN... Then I'll have to cut & buff the paint job... I just keep telling myself that it'll all be worth it when she splashes this summer ;)

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

Good luck getting finished with the filling & rough sanding soon. I will finally get lucky & have 2 stores close for paint, but I'm so far from needing it, it doesn't really help much now. But it will 1 day.

Hope to see some primed hull pix soon! Warm off-white (towards cream) or cool (towards blue or gray)? Didn't you get a color sample from someone to try & color match the pink?

Have a great end to the week!

It would have to be a warm off white- Like a hatteras white, or a light cream color... I've got the pink chosen, I think... Though that part of the painting is a ways off. The company that I'm dealing with can custom mix any color in their two-part marine urethane, which is what I think I am going to use on this project.

Great. Not too often on a boat, but pearl was popular in the 50's & 60's.....

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

Fill... Sand. Fill... Sand.... The fun continues...

Progress has been steady, but frustrating! The Gel coat and first layer of 'glass on this boat were pretty shoddily done when it was built- there were a LOT of bubbles and voids in the gel, so when I sanded it, I had to go all the way down to bare 'glass in most places... There were quite a few voids and bubbles in the first layer of cloth used in the layup as well. So, After sanding the decks down, I've been going over everything inch by inch, filling any problem areas, and sanding them down. I did three 'passes'- Every time I'd find something that I missed the time before. I THINK i've got it all now- Or most of it, anyway!

Before I sanded the gel off, the fins had nice, sharply defined edges... So I repaired them with some filler, and reshaped them-

0223Fins.jpg

I THINK that the deck is ready for primer... If course, I'll probably find more pinholes next time I go over it, but there is a point where you just have to call it good enough :)

The hull is ready to go now, too. That transom is a pain- But I got it all done, filled, and sanded. The louvers look cool, but they are no fun to work on !

The paint and primer have been ordered. I decided NOT to use the cream/off white- I am using the pure white, which is 'original'. I have chosen a two-Part urethane that's made by the same company as the single part that I used on the Glasspar. I'm also using their high build primer. Hopefully we'll get some great weather next week so I can get some spraying done.\

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

What is a high build primer?

A high build primer is any primer with a relatively high solids content that gives you a good surface to sand and fair down before paint... Think of it as a thick primer that will fill VERY MINOR scratches, cracks, and pinholes. I am NOT using the products from the company linked above, though- But the product I am using is probably similar. I will be using this-

http://www.supermarinepaint.com/primer-etching.asp

I've used it on prior projects, and have really liked it.
