HEy Azlo,

Clearly you are one your way to the top of the preseason mock draft for 2011 Splash of the Year...

I have a 68 Holiday too - did you ever contemplate putting in a newer motor - I found a 140 from a crap glasser and bought it for $375 and dropped in right in - had to get the alternator and starter reworked - but I essentially got a much newer motor for way less than a total rebuild on a old 120....

Looks great!!!!

What I Plan on doing, once i get my boating fix, is to install another 4 cyl like the saturn eco tec wich is lighter & puts out higher torque, higher rpms, and 180hp. Right now i just want to get to the lake. Supposely with the available bolt ons you can produce 230hp!! But of course I wont be doing that unless I get a hull rated for that much HP. The building, modifications, and imagination never stops do they.

I got my girl for free so she's not much to look at. I started a thread (1968 Starcraft Holiday V - OB) last night with no pictures. Today I'm trying to get back to it so I can post a few pictures. They are not that good but it will give you an idea of her condition. I got her stripped pretty good. That was fairly easy. I'm better at demolishing than building.

Sounds cool...now that would be interesting to see someone do....BTW the 140 moves my Holiday just fine - can probably do 40+ with the right prop....

Just keep on making us feel meek.....wish I had that shop!

For FREE ,,nice!! Yeah stripping is easy right. Your gonna like this journey. Your definitely gonna learn alot if u havent already. I just finished reading the torque specs for transom plate, gonna have to double check. If u have a wife and kids u minus well tell them that u have a new member in the family, she gonna take that much time & money.

Man,,,, just got news from the machine shop. Both my head & block are cracked! What a bummer!! :( And I dont trust block welds. Had bad experiences with them. Well maybe this is an excuse to change directions here, 4.3?, ecotec?, Hmmmm. Will post pics if the cracks are visible. Till then ....

What a pity. Maybe follow Jason's lead and buy a cheapo glass rig with a 4.3 and heaps of nice stainless hardware! :D

Azlo, please ditch the idea of putting a non-typical marine motor in your boat. It just isn't going to happen. I've read countless threads in the I/O forum where people with similar ideas are shot down. It just isn't practical. There was only one I saw where it actually came to fruition and it was a gentleman in Australia who adapted a modern 3.8 to a boat. He did a great job but extensive fabrication was required. Stick with a GM marine 4 or 6 cylinder. A long block from Rapido would be a great option since you've already refurbished your drive parts.

I kinda disagree ezmobee. In the performance boat community guys are always adapting non marine motors with great success. The latest surge for lake boats is the LSX GM motors. There are several jetboat guys running these now with great success. Az may be very familiar with the motor he suggested. That is half the battle. I do agree that a replacement marine 4 cyl is the most affordable and easiest way out but I would hate to think where we would be if there were not those pioneers that were willing to try something different.

Listen to Ezmo too much and you will be plugging that hole in your transom and slapping an I/O on the back!:p

A jet would be a completely different ball game LM. You really can't practically bolt a sterndrive to a motor not designed for it.

The jets were merely examples. There are plenty of I/O performance boats running around with non-marine motors. It's really not that different. In either configuration you have to get the power from the motor's crank to the drive's input. I'm not arguing that it would be easy. I'm just saying it can be done. To tell him not to try is like telling Bell that phone will never work. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Alzo dude Im sorry about the block and head. All this time I thought you wanted it pretty blue. Any engine can be used but I would stick to one that can be marineized easily to get me in the water. 3.0 4.3 ect. Then if you get the itch go for it. You boat is to cool to stay with standard power for ever.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

What Im gonna do is just get it to the lake. So im gonna just put a 140 meanwhile. BUT, im definitely gonna experiment with an engine. And if I fail at it oh well just put the 140 back and then maybe try again later.

EZ, I saw that thread on the Australian guy with 3.8 engine. Nice mod and some serious ambition that aussie has. But im gonna put the 140 in so I can get to the waters.

Ok so I will do it like that.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Well this is the first for me. But I went to the machine shop to pick up my sorry cracked block & head and the owner had a chance to talk to me. He was telling me how he had repaired his personal engine by using a lock & stitch method. Common use but more modern way. Luckily I got to talk to him for like an hour or so, maybe 40mins at most. He convinced me on trying this method. I told him that as soon he finished i would get it running to make sure it wouldnt leak. I also told him I was looking for a long term relationship & not just a one time. I was convinced at the process. I left the place convinced that he wouold take care of the cracks. Time will tell and I feel little relief. W e will see.
