Anyone have any soldering experience? I may end up "tinning" the spades on the relays (if messing with female connectors doesn't work).

Should I heat the spade on the relay then apply solder? Or apply solder to soldering gun tip and THEN apply to spade?

BA - first you want to clean the logs. I use very fine grit sand paper. Pre-heat and tin the iron then put the iron on one side of the lug and the solder on the other side. When as the solder begins to melt, remove the iron. Don't keep the iron on the lug any longer than needed - the lugs might melt the relay plastic. You want to be pretty fast on this. Good luck.

EDIT - Your safest bet on all this if you can't tighten the relay socket is cut the socket off and crimp female spade lugs on. No melting danger and ruining the relays.

i've often been able to crimp the female lug tighter with a pair of needlenose pliers and fix contact problems that way.

I think that CMC uses a formed plastic relay socket. Makes a good idea almost impossible to do. I've ended up crushing the socket just about every time.

I've got another thread going about the TNT problem. I mistakenly posted the soldering question in this thread.

Maybe, but you got the answer. By way of qualification, I've been doing this work professionally work since 1964. OMG - That's a long time.

Made a bit more progress

-mounted seat backer plates under floor
-riveted floor down
-riveted bow casting deck down
-fastened rear casting deck
-cut new bow hatch doors (found some leftover 3/4" ply in the garage)
-bilge pump plumbed and wired
-scuffed up decking etc to prepare for carpet adhesive
- finished installed new telltale hose and fittings

Going to start carpet install this evening. I've been waiting for warmer weather....and it's going to be 70 degrees today. I'm going to have my son pull the boat out of the garage and let it warm up in the sun for the afternoon, so the wood etc is warm when I install carpet.

A splash on Thursday is still my plan. The power trim and new seats are what we're looking most forward to. The rest of the improvements over last year are mostly aesthetic.

I'll have an update on the carpet install tonight. I also bought a quart of contact cement for areas that I want instant adhesion(i.e. hatch door edges etc).

Lots of progress tonight.

Got the bow and stern casting decks glued down.....and 95% of the main floor.

The weldwood adhesive was easy to work with, although it tacks up quickly....so working small areas at a time is best.

This is from DAP website:
1. Lay out floor covering according to manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Apply adhesive evenly to clean floor using recommended trowel size.
3. “Legs” must develop before lowering the carpet into the adhesive. To determine if “legs” have developed,
place a scrap piece of material into the adhesive-then pull the scrap away. If strings or “legs” appear,
proceed to step 4. If no “legs” appear, wait 5 minutes and repeat this step.
4. Once “legs” develop, lay the floor covering into the adhesive. Roll in both directions with a 75 pound roller.
If installing foam or sponge backed carpet, use a cardboard carpet core to smooth out the carpet.
5. If bubbles occur, insert an awl in the center of the bubble to allow the vapor to escape, then smooth it out..
6. If necessary to make seams, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to seal the seams and complete the
installation.
7. Do not expose to heavy traffic for 24 hours.

I got the casting deck hatches glued also. A lot of trimming etc left,...but the finish line is def in sight.

Did you use a notched trowel to put the adhesive down? If so, what size notch? How much working time would you say you had? Any other pointers? Thanks.

Re: 1975 Super Sport 16' boat requesting admission to the Starmada! (2nd Splash compl

I used a 3/16ths v-notch trowel. Google the Weldwood stuff ...DAP has instructions posted on their website. Def wear gloves....it's a bit messy.

Put some of the adhesive in a separate container and reseal the gallon can....while your working an area.

Tonight I'm going to try and get the side panels carpeted.....the hatch panels trimmed and fitted...the tilt/trim switch attached to throttle handle...

I'm still debating whether to re-install the sliding doors, or possible make a hinged split panel(carpeted) to cover the area under the splash well.

My thinking with the split panels(vs the sliding doors) is that I can mount rod holders(or whatever) to the panels...thus utilizing wall space normally lost if sliding doors are there.
