I'm guessing that the 3/4" ply may be causing a little bit of an issue. But I've got it all worked out now.

Going to finish the last little section of floor today, and start cutting out the casting deck.

I put the oem bow supports under the casting deck. It won't allow me to mount the trolling battery in the front of the bow, so I'm going to have to make new supports.

Re: 1975 Super Sport 16' boat requesting admission to the Starmada!

Just finished the back of the consoles and refitted the casting deck. Still need a couple supports under the casting deck(esp where the pedestal seat will be placed), but I'm pleased with my progress so far.

Budget constraints are holding me up now. Only need noodles, spar varnish, and some long rivets for the flooring to get her in somewhat splash-ready shape.

I'm going to steal the new steering setup on my runabout for the Starcraft, but I won't do that til I feel the Tinny is ready to get wet.

New carpet for the boat probably aint't gonna happen for a couple weeks, so I'll probably just slap the blue carpet that came with the boat back in temporarily. The PO just put it in recently so it's in good shape.

Nice work on the carpentry. Looking real good.

I made sure to take pics from a distance. ;) :D

More progress today:

Had to do some more tweaking to the bow floor(squeaked). It's all good now.

I took out all floorboards and consoles so I could get started on applying the Spar varnish. The floor was a very tight fit, so removing them was a bear. I ended up taking a 1/4" off each edge to make the reinstall a bit easier.
Sanded all boards with 80 grit sandpaper to give the varnish something to grab.

I've got the first coat on all boards. The plywood sucked it up like a sponge! The ply was dry in 15 minutes.
This pic was taken a few minutes after varnish was applied. Not shiny at all.

I've got to wait 4-6 hours between coats.

Tomorrow more varnishing. I'm also going to spray water inside the ribs( to get out the rotted wood etc that fell inside).

Then I'm going to shop vac the drainage spaces under the ribs to ensure no debris is trapped that could impede drainage to the bilge.

I did a bit of tweaking on my floor to get a good fit. too. At least I was trimming instead of adding. Fresh ply does suck up the spar. How many coats are you planning?

Re: 1975 Super Sport 16' boat requesting admission to the Starmada!

I noticed today that I've cut my floor too wide. Currently, the floor sections are resting on the out "rails"...and I now see that they should be resting on the ends of the ribs.

Once the varnish is dry I'm going to have to cut them down a bit, then recoat the cut edges. It's not a biggie...just a pain in the butt. Better they are too wide than too narrow.

I went down and bought some Rustoleum oil based enamel paint for the floors. Of course, I forgot to get the no slip additive.:( And a quart of Rustoleum enamel(royal blue) for the consoles. I'll get the consoles done tonight....hopefully.

I rinsed out the boat again today...and blew out the spaces below the ribs to ensure that there were no obstructions.

Going to pick up noodles tomorrow. My local store should have at least 60 of them, so I won't have to drive all over town.

Re: 1975 Super Sport 16' boat requesting admission to the Starmada!

as GA noted, easier to cut em smaller than larger.....

i got some pool noodles yesterday. you'd think the kid at the dollar store had never seen anyone buying 40 at a time....... my entire camper shell is a mess of pool noodles; not worried about anyone stealing the power tools cuz they wouldn't be able to find em!

More progress today...

Put final coat of spar varnish on the floor pieces.

Cleaned up the consoles and started painting the sheet metal. Got a coat of paint on the dash panels too.

THE TRANSOM IS OUT !!!!!

After poking around the transom...it was obvious that it needed to be pulled. The center was still strong, but the sides were turning to mush.
Last night, I sprayed any rusty bolts with PB Blaster so I wouldn't have to fight with them today.

Drilled out the corner caps and used a dremel tool with cutoff wheel to cut the aluminum back

All of the screws, bolts, etc came with incredible ease. There were a handful of screws under the splashwell that just spun and wouldn't back-out because the wood behind them was too soft.

My first attempt at lifting the transom out failed because I forgot to take the drain holes out.

I ended getting my son and his friend pull the transom up(from behind the boat) while I levered it out from inside the boat. It came out in 3 pieces
94ad3250.jpg

I put the pieces together and used it for a template. I cut the basic transom shape out and put the wood back in the transom and traced the final shape
f302fe19.jpg

Finally got the pieces cut and glued. Will start varnishing it tomorrow. Probably 4-5 coats.

i think you need to consider the melting point of aluminum. you're moving so fast on that boat i'm worried that it will melt into a heap of slag....
(ie, thanks for the inspiration!)

Great work and quick! This is the great thing about tinnies, you can rehab them quickly even on a budget or go hog wild on then.

The scary part is that I seem to spend more time trying to find my tools than actually working. I'm terrible with putting tools down and forgetting where I put them.

More progress tonight:

I cut down all the floor panels. They now land on the end of the ribs(right where they're supposed to). I put the last coat of spar varnish on the backside of all the floor panels. Tomorrow, I'll finish the last coat on the top of the panels.

Put a second(and last) coat on the dash panels.

I also cleaned up the bow framework(I've decided to use it, instead of making something else) and painted it. I'm using the roll and tip method....it's very easy and the finish comes out very nice.

Consoles are done.

Final coat of spar varnish on floor boards is curing now.

Transom got 2 coats of varnish today....2 coats for the other side of it tomorrow.

Once I get the noodles, I can start putting the floor back in the boat.

Noodles! I've used 35 noodles from the console to the bow. Got to search for more noodles tomorrow.

Consoles and bow pieces are all bolted/screwed in now. Main deck and floor under splashwell won't be screwed down til I get the rest of the noodles. Probably going to need 40-50 more.

Temporary seats(until I can afford better ones)

The carpet is the stuff that came with the boat. It's temporary also.
