Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Cabin boat turned cuddy, IO turned OB on a bracket, now that would be a heck of a transformation.

This is not my boat Jason, I am going to go look at it today. It is still a cabin boat but with a bracket on it. But I do agree that it would be a heck of a transformation though.

I know others have applied shark hide, but I'll still say that is some serious stuff. People have died, while using it at boat companies. Of course now they take proper precautions. If your doing it right there, outside, you should be fine. I might still set up a box fan in front of me though.

Thanks for stopping by LonLB, it is going to be outside and there is always a breeze blowing here. I may even be wearing the respirator to do this job. I do know that no smoking while doing it is a must, stuff is highly flamable.

That Islander could certainly handle something in the 200 + range, but that thing would fly. That would be huge power for that boat especially now that she has no hat on. (you'd need a 2nd job to cover the fuel bill too).

If you don't want a go-fast boat I'd suppose anything in the 115 to 150 range would be plenty comfortable.

horiconducker turned his islander into a SC and used a 150 and said it performed well.....just for comparison.

I spend lots of time on a 23' fiberglass Seaswirl with a full hardtop...and it runs great with a 225hp Yamaha. I'd also recommend a 140-175hp range, it all depends on how fast you need to go

Yea I was thinking that big motor would make an Islander just fly like you would not believe. But was thinking more inbetween the 115 - 150 hp range. Just wanted to get others opinions on what you would think. As for the fuel Jason, that would not be that big of an issue as compared to the cost of an engine that big.

So I am going to go check it out here in a couple hours and see what kind of shape it is in. I would then have 2 22 ft Islander hulls, and boy is my wife ever excited about that.....NOT....:( But I guess she is just going to have to understand if I do get it. And I think she is actually cool about it but just giving me a bad time about it.

Hey what's the only thing better than an Islander? TWO ISLANDERS!

Kelly, having some actual on-the-water experience with an Islander (ha ha Jas! :p) I can tell you the 165 in mine is MORE than enough power for this boat. From a dead stop, throw the throttle forward and yer on a plane before you know what happened.

Full discloser: I may only be 42, but I'm very much an old fuddy duddy type. I drive the speed limit and I complain about the crap music the kids listen to these days.

Generally a bigger engine, at lower throttle settings yet still on plane will net you much better fuel economy than a smaller engine, that has to reach full throttle to maintain that same speed.

A 150 would be a good bet, if for no other reason than how common they are. IMO.

Thanks again for the input LonLB. I had no idea and that is why I posted on here to find out.

Well I went and checked out that Islander yesterday and it would have been a great project to finish out, but that is not going to happen. Not unless I was really good at welding aluminum. Lets just say that the 22 ft islander now fits in the bed of a short bed chevy pickup...:( The guy was selling it and everyone wanted to pay him nothing for it and then some guy offered him money for the trailer for almost what he was asking for the whole package. So he sold the trailer and proceeded to chop her up for scrap, I was really bummed. If I had been able to get to it last weekend then it would have been a whole boat. Oh well, I probably did not need another project in the first place anyway.

:eek: OMG - An Islander jigsaw puzzle. At least the seller can say it hauls real nice. Wife is probably calmed down by now :). Ya have to tell her its just parts - that always, sometimes, every once in a while, once in a blue moon might work.

Nope GA it would not work in this case. Momma was not thrilled and so it is for the best.

But the first coat of sharkhide is now on the bottom. Now let it dry till next weekend and then the second coat and boat back onto trailer.

Hey guys, thought I would stop in and say hello. Sorry for kind of being AWOL for a while, but things were just not going that good for me and my family. Things are looking up now though, although the Islander is probably going to head to the scrap yard. Not sure on that just yet. But on the bright side I now have a 1962 16' starcraft that is probably a holiday, it is a close bow and has a 1975 Merc 850 on it with power tilt and trim. Its in the shop right now trying to get the idle figured out.

Hey Kelly, Just found your thread today, loved the progress and was disappointed when I got to today's post. I would have loved to have seen the finished product. I always wanted to polish my mariner but didn't have the patience. If I was closer I'd take that hull off your hands so it wouldn't end up in the scrap yard...Good luck with the new boat!

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

The Islander is a bare polished hull now, there is nothing in it but a few leaves. The problem that I ran into with it is that the wife lost her job so funds are kind of on the low side for a boat project. I am still having issues with scrapping it out though, although I can get almost what I paid for it in scrap. We will just have to see what happens in the near future.

As for the little boat, it is in the shop at the moment. I got it pretty cheap cause the guy said that it ran really good and when I got there to check it out it would not start. I shot some ether in it and it started and died, I knew that it was a fuel delivery problem. The seller said he would have to take it to a shop, so I made him an offer for the way it was and he took it. I went home pulled the floats from the carbs and freed up the needle valves and it started right up. It just has a very high idle and I could not get it down so am having it looked at. I did some favors for the mechanic and so he is checking it out and it will only cost me parts. :)

Kinda wondering how you're coming along with your Islander project? I'm restoring a '70 myself down here in Roseburg. Everythings is out of it and Gluvit and transom rebuild begins today.
