Taking JB's advice...Got the sanding done from the patch forward....both sides...but only looking at it from one side...trust me!

Thank you for the credit, but I think GT floated that theory last night ;)

I added "viewed from above only".... So maybe a little of both :)

From up here on this side, it looks fab! Plus nice & even!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

That's right, he did say something about that... hand laid...I need to look into that just to see the differences in using a mold..I would think they still use a plug to get them started?

Ya still undecided gel or paint...

True, a mold is still used but the layers of glass sometimes don't get compressed to form as well as the "Blown In" glass. At least that's what my research tells me, but hey, I'm just an...

Your still looking good. If you plan to gel coat your boat, I would say you have at least 100 hours or more in sanding. This is with a DA and wet sanding by hand. Then you will get to buff and polish after all the sanding. Lots of fun now!!!
Did you sand down on the keel patch yet. If so how is it working out?
Have a great hump day. ;)

So...I tried hitting the patch with the air file..36 grit paper from HF..loaded in about .5 milliseconds...put on a second paper...added some water....fell apart in about .5 nanoseconds..gonna need some better paper...I recall from my tool maker days that Norton makes some real good sanding paper..will see if I can find some local...

Did manage to get the large areas roughed down on the one side of the boat...

Here is a spot that looks like the previuos repair missed the actual problem...

Insert another pic here...

You will notice a ghost smudge in lower right side of both pics...thought it was on the lens...nope..inside the camera..so...tore it apart to clean it...while watching a little TV...things were going fine..found the smudge cleaned it...then got a zap from a built in battery..dropped the camera and tore the ribbon cable that goes to the LCD....yikes...wife gonna kill me..Sony Camera no good anymore...

Happy hump day all...

Sorry to hear about the camera mishap...

There are good grades of sandpaper, but clogging is gonna happen...sometimes the stuff that's used on the surface, has a gummy coating that forms as it cures...once it is removed, it goes better...sometimes it is just gummy till its gone...

Couple of tips...this one is a bit of a pain, but it will work as you get the hang of it...when you first put the sandpaper to the surface, with whatever you are using to back it up...whether it be a block, your hand or an air file...lightly set it on the the surface and hold the weight of it, don't let the full weight sit on the surface... run it for a second or two, stop, then flip it and use a wire brush to remove the build up...after you do this a few times, all or most of the stuff that gums up the paper, will be gone...just keep running it for a few seconds, flip, scrub with wire brush, and continue...you will get much longer life out of the sandpaper, and after a bit, you'll have nothing but happy dust coming off the surface...

Also, be warned, that this strange phenomenon can occur each time you change to a finer grit...

Hope this helps...

Uh, ya home-built taser-ed yourself  That needs to go on the never again list.

Wed is now in the bag, so hopefully you'll get some time Thurs & Fri to try GT's paper cleaning tip.

I've used Norton's before, it was great paper. But I've never used it wet. Don't hold me to it, but I suspect that an AirFile needs to have robust backing for the sandpaper, wet or dry. Specific for an AirFile maybe.... The last W/D paper I bought was green, had an unusual paper backing and was GREAT. I don't recall who's or where I got it. I'll look as I head out in a bit.

Good luck heading to the weekend.

GT1M... I have been meaning to tell you I have been using the wirebrush tip and it works great...I was not aware that the gummies struck every time you change grit....fun....

JBC...Yes I did tazer the carp out of myself with that thing...like 15 times...lol...I was reading up on the paper..seems there are different types of backings...denoted with a Letter in front or behind the grit in most cases...found some that should be imposssible to tear...more tomorrow...

I used the 3m sanding paper. I got it from a auto paint supply house. I didn't have the problem of the paper loading up but it dosn't last for very long. I can get about a 3' x 4' section done with one peice of paper. It's just alot of work. I will also take my grinder and take just the rough off first.

What happened to GT's post...and JB's reply?

I just found my sandpaper stash, & yes, Nortons is what I was using, and although not too hard to tear, it has this strange 'feel' to the paper backing. The 150Grit w/d (it's red) holds up really well! I used it tonight working on sanding on a trailer.

I don't know what reply your talking about, but if it was before 9am this morning, it may have been relative to the spam posts across several threads.... I don't remember commenting on it here, but I know I did, so it may have been here

Maybe I didn't see the actual spam...GT said something about reporting to ezmobee...I thought he was making a joke about my post with lack of pictures...then you replied to his post...maybe there was spam in front of his post that I didn't see..

oh well all is good I spose...

Yes it was related to the spam posts. I got the same update from 8 or 9, maybe more, threads.

I think their doing a pretty good job, I've gotten a bunch from another forum, and it doesn't have nearly the post count/hour or remotely close to as many users as iboats. So, somebody, somewhere is doing a fantastic job.

Hi Troop,

Yeah, some fool thought he could just come on here and post his solicitations all over the place, but the Mods here were all over that goof and blasted him into outer space...

Way to go, Iboat Mods!

Sorry for the interruption...and now back to our regularly scheduled program..."Therapy Sessions with an Ebko"...;)
