Re: bye bye Boats and Guns???????

Trollhole, you posting of what happened to you on the lake, about the guy with the gun...... is EXACTLY why I carry one... I have 2 teenage girls and wife that loves the water. With me being the only male on board and with me knowing how "SOME" men are... To a group of drunk or "excited" guys wanting to have a "good time"... it leaves little option but to keep things more even... I dont want to ever have to look at my girls or wife while they are being harassed sexually and little I can do about because of being out numbered or physically overpowered. If you ever have been challenged for no reason by a group of men, only then will you understand why I'm still in favor of being able to carry a firearm. Remember its not the "decent folks" being idots as you stated.

I also carry a gun on my boat offshore, anticipate needing it for a large fish some day but have yet to use it. Pirates I have not considered. I would think a pirate would be much better armed than myself or he isn't much of a pirate.. maybe I should upgrade? My gun is unloaded and only I know where the ammo is for safety sake (safety is rule #1) these things kill.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with responsible people owning/carrying a fire arm it's the irresponsibles you must watch out far.

If you don't know how to use one and/or you are not responsible enough to be near one, stay away from them. If you're ever in need of one and don't have it, hope someone nearby does and shares your interests.

It's your right in the US, take it or leake it, but don't take it away from me.

Technologically we have come so far from being cave men. Emotionally we are but one foot step out of the cave.

on lots of lakes it is illegal to discharge firearms. You might check the law before you go shooting boat offenders :)

Bob, Beernutz, tourists in rented cars most likely arrived by air, NOT carrying any nail clippers, pocket knives, AK-47's or any other weapons of any kind. Out of state plates mean they drove their own cars bringing who-knows-what.

personally I think it would be a good idea to be armed while boating in the Carribean. Keep a sharp eye out for the Black Pearl--you don't want to get your timbers shivered!

jtw

Re: bye bye Boats and Guns???????

Sorry if I missed something about this in the second page I skipped, but another example of removing firearms from the citizenry is Peru. The Shining Path, a bloody bunch of Marxist terrorists were taking the country over and ruthlessly killing its citizenry because almost no one was allowed to own a gun. (Why is it the Marxist Regimes make darn sure only THEY have the guns? Can't do all the mischief you want if someone might stand up to you!) Former President Fujimori may have been corrupt in the end, but he did a lot to save his country when he started handing out single shot shotguns to the remote villaigers. The Shining Path has been retreating ever since. The point is that the guns can be a problem in the wrong hands and a most useful tool in the right hands. (The issue isn't the guns!!!) Those who don't care about the rules will always do as they wish without regard for others. When the law abiding citizens MAY be carrying, the crooks take pause and are far more likely to behave themselves. This notion that outlawing guns is good has always been thoroughly corrupt and stupid. I have been shot at before. But I don't carry. I live in California. I knew people who would still be alive if they had carried. We do need to reign in the irresponsible Yahoos as well as the criminals, no question. (When will we EVER get serious about reigning in the crimials again?!) But the responsible citizens have a right they are being progressively denied. No thanks to the emotional but unthinking leftie elitists who pretend they are smarter than everyone else. Sorry, just calling as I see it.

Time to lock this Thread.

No sense reviving it after 15 months of inactivity only to hear somebody spouting political insults. That kind of venomous opinion belongs only in NBR, if anywhere.

Might as well jump into the fray. :D I carry my 9mm everytime I step out of my house for two reasons. First, I have the right (and responsibility)to own a firearm because a lot of good people have died to protect that right (I'm not throwing that in anyone's face BTW) to protect myself, my family, and anybody else who might be in dire straights where a weapon can save them. Secondly, it's better to have that protection and never need it than to ever need it and not have it. :D

Re: bye bye Boats and Guns???????

OK, I apologize for cutting a little too loose with my comment. I find it difficult to understand those who have great voice in our present culture yet who do not seem to grasp any sense of historical perspective. They say they believe in the Constitution but seem to want to redefine everything legal or historical into their own way of looking at things (a way that is relatively recent, and not compatible with the intent of the founding fathers as based upon their own writings). I see a great moral decline as well as a sort of intellectual decline which really started to escalate during the 60's. (Technology does not equal reason, by the way!) I personally am disappointed with this. No, I do not want to return to the 50's with segregation and all that. But I really think we're no better off now in other ways.
Anyway, I will be more careful of how I say things in the future. And please understand that I do not equate everyone who disagees with me as an idealogical foe. My comments in the above post were aimed at the few most vocal extremists in the political world, not the rank and file, and certainly not at any individual around this board. I have no use for extremists on either end of the spectrum, by the way.

Re: bye bye Boats and Guns???????

I'm a Canadian and I have carried guns in boats, but mainly for hunting. I've never had a reason to keep one on board just for protection of rapists, thieves, and muggers. I think our winters keep all the crazies down in the warmer climates! However, we are seeing more and more gun violence, especially in Toronto, our largest city. Ironically, most violence is with hand guns even though our hand gun laws are very strict and have been in effect for over 70 years.

Violence is no longer a south of the border issue. If this nonsense keeps up, I'll be packing my 12 guage on my boat too!

cobra 3.0

Welcome to our world. :D

Even though it seems like Americans are more prone to violance, it in all probabality comes from our heratage of freedom and civilizing the country. With freedom comes responsibility and it seems like a lot of uh, people don't want responsibility anymore. They would rather just let the government deal with all of thier problems. Violance is a reality in every culture in the world, and if keeping the rights that we have means living with that violance and facing it head on, so be it. I was born free and with one exception, I will bow to no one and die free. And I wouldn't change it even if I could. :D

Excellent thread by the way. It's nice to see people standing up for what they believe in and being civil about it.

Registered to carry in in Texas. Do I carry a gun......for sure. Do I carry one in my boat and why? Yes, to protect myself, family or any friends with me. Would I use it? In a New York minute but with the intention to stop not to kill.

What a great thread! It sheds some light on the value of current world events and what floats the politics embedded therein.

Wingnutt - It’s one of those never ending urban myths; there is more violence in America then other industrialized countries. It’s just not true. It’s one of those ‘ignorance-begets-ignorance” things. Guns are much more accessible here, as they were intended, so they become the weapon of choice. America is not more violent.

Biwayneo – there is a saying that goes something like “where ever I go, people are that much safer, and they don’t even know it.”

Re: bye bye Boats and Guns???????

Let's face it, if you're a bad guy, you'll find a way to arm yourself, law or no law. If you're a good guy, I've got nothing to fear from you armed or not. Unless of course you're one of those good guys with a really bad temper or just careless and/or thoughtless, in which case you're the guy "gun control" will protect me from. It seems the U.S. is always conflicted about the wisdom of having regulation to protect the innocent from the stupid. I'm okay with that - democracy is the worst form of government in the world, except for every other form. I favor gun licensing & background checks in part because it gives law enforcement another tool to keep the bad guys off the streets in the absence of other evidence.

I'm not a gun carrier, by the way, but I'll go all the way to the supreme court to support your right to it (provided of course you pass the criminal background check). Just don't ask me to take a bullet for it. (Not saying that anyone actually asked me to, just saying no in advance).

jtw
