Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

Well, I decided not to go hunting this morning. I did get to bed early and awoke at 0530, but stayed home.

Unlike many of you, I'm retired and can hunt every day if I choose. The season at my local WMA doesn't end until January 9, 2011 so I have time.

I'd prefer not to share the woods with a zillion hunters if possible. Plus the HSC gun range will be open today and making lots of blasting noises.

Honestly, I think the deer here are as cold blooded as the people. Even though I've been out there from daybreak on up, I've only seen deer movement at 0830 and 0930 when things have warmed up a bit. Supposed to get to 80 today and 85 tomorrow. The deer are used to warm temps.

Heck, there is an area just southeast of me that has the rut in JULY!

Aspeck - the deer I shot was definitely dead... just not recovered. I'll be looking for buzzards again tomorrow when I'm out there. Some folks tell me it can take a week or so for them to appear when a carcass is in the swamp.

Wow..,. Thats a generous season. I would say your justified in sittn out a few days if you so desire. My primary firearm season is only 7 or 9 days depending on the whims of the MN DNR.. Archery runs mid Sep thru Xmas. Muzzle loader started yest and runs 16 days, I plan to head out tue after Mondays rain turns to snow.
BTW I see my biggest bucks consistinently from 1100am till bout 2pm.
Good luck again on finding your buck....

Yeah, it's complicated down here. There are several different Zones with differening seasons... but those seasons basically apply to privately owned land.

The seasons for the WMAs varies for each one. The BP season for my local WMA is only 3 days long, so I have no interest in getting involved in a secondary hobby for such a short season.

The general gun season in my local Zone started Nov 6th and runs till Jan 20th.

Bag limit is 2 per day, but very, very few people ever achieve such.

BWR1953 I have hunted Canadian geese when it was almost 90 deg Cant imagine deer huntn' when its that warm. My coldest lifetime hunt was last year Muzzle Loader Went out at -14 below. My sandwich and bottle of water froze solid. Had to break chunks of my sandwich. Stayed out ALL day. When I got in that night I wraped myself around the woodburning stove like a monkey humpn a football. Didnt fill a tag, bur deer were running all over.

Works for me! Even sweeter if there's a bunch of snow and about 0 deg!

I'm usually in by 11/12 watching sports and trying to keep my eyes open! I've tried a few times going out at around 11 for a couple of hours and haven't seen a thing. Tried that this year just to change things up a bit.

Usually wont go out if the mercury is in the negatives unless it's opening weekend. If I'm not halfways enjoying myself out there, then I stay home. Not a fair weather hunter by any means. But I do have my limits..... Coldest I was out was -20, but we were chasing a deer. Kept moving, so it really wasn't that bad...

40 deg now. Sat all morning and saw nothing AGAIN.......... Strolled out to the area I'm watching b/4 I came home. There are tracks out there. Bet they're moving after dark. Still going right behind my stand too...

Cruzed around briefly today. It's a mass exodus out of town. Hunters are heading home since it ends tonite. Saw 3 trophy bucks in 3 vehicles.

Talking rain/snow here tomorrow too. Not sure when it's supposed to hit. May get the BP out in the morning. Going to hunt strictly public land. Been keeping track of where there seemed to be few hunters during the rifle season. Going to hit those spots....

Just got home a short while ago. Spent 10 hours in the tree stand today. Whew! Didn't see anything other than a flock of turkeys at 1025. The weather was flaky and that didn't help a bit. Gonna get worse this week too.

MIGHT have to turn the A/C on tonight! Showers predicted with a LOW of 70 degrees! Ugh.

And it's going to get cold by Thursday with temps down in the 30s. Will probably have to turn the heat on then. Sheesh. :D

I took these 2 pics with my phone while on the stand Sunday morning thats why they're fuzzy. Its hard to tell but this deer was less than 30 feet from my stand and then he laid down and stayed for over an hour !

To satisfy every one.......No, I didnt shoot him. His rack didnt meet the criteria our club has to go by. Had to let him walk. :(

Cool. And you had a perfect shot too! Now I remember what they look like..... That's why he layed there, he knew you weren't going to shoot. Tempted for an hour, must have been tough............

I watched this deer feed along with a boat load of others before he came and lay down. He walked by my stand when he first came out so close if I could have gotten my phone out in time and snapped a pic you would have seen the ladder leg of my tripod in the picture.

This deer was kind of like a watch dog after he lay down. Any time he would get alert I would look in the direction he was looking and see deer that I normally would not have seen.

Sunday was one of the best days I've had on a stand in a long time even though I didnt fire a shot. At one time I had over 20 deer in sight. OH, and the old proverb of when a doe busts you and blows at you it will run any deer in the area off...... I have to call "Bull Hockey" on that ! Four or five different does blew at me from different directions (I guess it was me) and none of the deer I was looking at or the buck that was laying down paid any attention to the does and their blowing.

I went out this morning for 3 1/2 hours, but didn't see anything. It was a beautiful 70 degrees with sun and calm wind. Used the A/C in the truck on the way to the site. Up to 84 now and very breezy.

Cold front coming tonight though.

Are you sure that the deer was blowing at you.

They have several differant blow tones, not all are distress or danger blows.

Fly Rod, no clue what they were blowin at. They all sounded the same to me but they were blowing all around and those that were where I could see them never paid any attention to the blowing.

Well, 3 days in ... sunny, rainy (3 inches worth) and snowy ... seen it all ... bro shot a nice 6 point before leaving for KY today. I missed 4 different doe ... 3 were real easy shots. came back in and checked my gun again ... 13 inches off! Couldn't adjust it ... just all over the place (it was all over the place on Sunday, but I had it dialed in for 3 shots in a quarter group. Apparently that all changed!) Gotta check scope, mounts, etc. But for now, put away the .243 and pulled out the .270. With the weather, keeping with the stainless and synthetic stock.

Will see what tomorrow morning holds. Have seen deer everyday and had very make-able shots each day, inspite of the weather.

Boy, is that bringing back bad memories! Put the .243 away for the season and stick with the .270. Figure out the .243 later..... Good luck!

DONE! .270 and .257 Roberts are at ready ... .270 for rainy, miserable days and days when we are hitting the rocky steeps, .257 for the fair weather and "nicer areas".
