30mph winds, 24 degrees, 3-4 foot waves ... no deer. Did get a couple of ducks, which was fun (yes, we had shotguns in the boats in case we saw any waterfowl). Fun day, but the waves and wind were too much with the pontoon ... called it quits around 2.

Have till the middle of January ... flintlock or archery only.

I HATE hunting deer in hi winds... At least u got sumtn' for supper. When u say flintlock, does that actually mean flintlock only ? No - inlines- ? Will watch for pic of that Monster !

Yep, the early season we can use inlines, but the late season it is flintlock only. I use flintlock in both seasons. Definitely adds a different twist and "irregularity" to the shooting. I remember when I first started I wanted a lot of powder in the pan to make sure it would fire. HA! That only delays the fire even more and makes more smoke in your face to boot. A little in the pan goes a LONG way and makes the smokepole much faster in firing.

My flintlock is an old CVA that I got as a kit for my 17th birthday. Put her together and finished her myself. Have been using her ever since. At times I would like to get a new one, but I could not go without using the "old faithful."

Tomorrow I will take my 9 year old out so she can shoot a couple of squirrels. She will enjoy that.

Flintlock all the way huh? A true purest.. I believe my good neighbor to the East- WIMUSKY shares that same passion...You get extra bragging rights if you knock one over with an [ Old School um...musket ] And I give you a double - At a boy -just for trying! And again- Best of Luck!!!

Daughter was not feeling well this AM, so no squirrel hunting. Freezing drizzle called for late morning, so I decided to get some office work done. So why am I here??? LOL!

Flintlock is one step deeper in the "purist" way. I use a caplock which was built after the flintlock. Matchlock came b/4 flintlock. I'm not positive, but, I think matchlocks were all smoothbore. You were almost better throwing the round at your target an be as accurate.

Did someone mention muskets? Give me a chance to find my camera......

"if it's brown it's down" :)

Yep, that is my mantra also ... rifle season usually starts out that way also ... meat in the freezer is more important that an impressive rack (but I won't shy away from a rack either ... and will hold out for one after the freezer is almost full). My family eats more venison than any other meat, and generally the times we buy beef each year you could count on your hand. This year ... gotta do better with the smokepole, or the family will go hungry. Littlest aspeck's favorite food is venison steak.

30 Dec 10 Thursday
Day 25

My head just isn't in the game anymore. I'm thinking of just packin' it in and calling it a season. Hadn't been hunting for 5 days, so decided to go check on my stand, look for any new tracks along my access road and maybe scout out the southern part of the WMA. On the way over, I saw a roadsign stating that there was a prescribed burn in progress. Hmmm.

Got signed in and learned that 2 more bucks were taken since my last outing. Don't know if they were taken by using dogs or not though.

Went over to check my stand and there were 4 trucks parked in the area where I usually leave my Jeep. Crowded. Walked on in and saw another hunter coming back up a split from my trail and we waved to one another.

The stand was okay, but I really didn't feel like staying. The gun range was open and there was all kinds of racket. That really detracts from the overall hunting experience for me, so I left. I did see a single set of recent tracks going in one direction at the cutover point where the deer cross my access road. I also saw a set of recent hunter tracks going down my road as well.

So, I headed to the truck, then drove down to the southern part of the WMA... the same area where the controlled burn was taking place. I was thinking that I might be able to hunt the downwind side of the burn area, which is directly across the street from where the last burn was done a month ago. I figured that the fire might move the deer and make them more accessible. Got to the area and the smoke was pretty bad and I realized that I'd have to drive a mile or two back up the road, then walk for miles toward the fire and smoke. Nah. On my way out, I passed 1/2 dozen other trucks with hunters who apparently had the same idea. Crowded again.

So there ya have it... I'm starting to feel like I'm just wasting my time and hoping that some kamikaze deer will cross my path. LOL

Smoke from the fire over the area that had been previously burned.

Well BWR, if you do pack it in, at least you can say you gave it one heck of a try. As up here I'm sure it's the same down there, the longer the season goes the chance of bagging a deer decreases. I know for myself, if I'm not having at least some fun in the woods, I may as well not go. Sounds like you may be getting burnt out(although not bad, no pun intended). There's always next year, God willing..........

Season finale for me in Chaz

Pulled my tree stand out of the WMA this afternoon. The season is still open for another week in Chassahowitzka and for another 18 days in my Zone, but I do believe I'm done.

Can't see me spending a lot of time and money driving up to Citrus WMA for scouting and just two days of the remaining hunt. That, plus maybe another 1000 hunters in the woods makes me doubtful that I'll put forth an effort in that direction.
