hey oops,

Thanks for info. Now I'm confused. The guy at Campion, Jason Spanier (see his message in my post here) says there is no kevlar in the hull. Maybe it's on newer boats? Yeah, I'd like more info about this, proof I guess!

Jason replied that your 96 model had wood stringers and did not have the Kevlar strip.

Campion?s are now produced of VEC, (Virtual Engineered Composite), construction. They are advertised as having a Kevlar laminate strip along the keel. Here are the hull amenities they advertise.,
Apex hull
Corecell? sandwich laminate construction
Kevlar? laminate reinforcement
3TEX three-dimensional fibreglass
XL structural stringer grid
Uni-bond deck joint
Composite transom

Hi jevery,

Oops says otherwise, though . And he lives in Kelowna, B.C. Canada, where they make Campions.... I don't know who Jason was, maybe a salesman. Maybe the factory will shed some light on the subject.

It sounds like boats are lighter nowadays -does that mean they are made with cheaper materials? Is Corecell a type of cored hull?

As for wood, there are an awful lot of old wooden boats still around. They're a pain in the buttocks to maintain but I wonder if fiberglas boats will still be around in 60 years or so?

Yes they did. I received a shorter reply than you. Something like "Campion construction at that time was such that the stringers are of wood encapsulated in fibreglass" Regards, Campion. I replied to you in a different thread, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=261684 , as this thread was a few pages down at the time. Ya probably missed it.
Really though, It sounds like your boat is solid and from what I read of Campion quality, it should last many more years given care. Just remember to reseal your thru-hulls every few years and store it dry. Have a great summer. I'm teaching my 5 year old how to tube this summer

Re: Fiberglas stringers? Kevlar?

I took my info from this article

http://www.topspeed.com/boats/campion/-campion-allante-825i-mc-ar33253.html

I?m assuming, (maybe wrongly), that the Campion is an 07 model and the rest of the lineup is of the same construction. The Kevlar could be primarily a selling point of little real value, I don?t know, but there is no doubt some Kevlar cloth in the boat in the article.

As for wood boat construction, I see four paths
Quality construction, Owner cares for his equipment ? Boat will last indefinitely
Quality construction, Owner neglects his equipment ? Boat will go bad at some point
Poor Construction, Owner cares for his equipment ? Boat will go bad at some point
Poor construction, Owner neglects his equipment ? Boat will go bad quickly

So it?s really no wonder why I?ve read twenty five threads in the past few months regarding rotting structure. Bottom line is buy quality, care for your equipment, you?ll have many many good years from your boat. That?s all most of us want?Except for gas prices to go down so we can use our boats.

Yep corecell is a type of coring. Nope the make them lighter with better and more expensive materials.

The killer of boats with wood in them is the resin (cheap) that they used was not water proof, if you replace/repair and use a epoxy resin like MAS the chances of it failing again are next to none.

When I disassembled my boat you could see it, all the parts were coated and it failed.

Re: Fiberglas stringers? Kevlar?

The polyester isn't waterproof thing comes up every now and then, nothing is waterproof, some things are just more water resistant than others.

epoxy is more water resistant than polyester, but the wood isn't going to rot from a few mloecules of water migrating through the laminate, it rots from coming in contact with water. Water gets in from cracks, unsealed screw holes, joints that don't line up or aren't sealed, poor design, poor workmanship and other related problems, this will cause the wood to rot at the same rate whether it's made from polyester or epoxy.

Cute kid, Jevery! He looks like he's up for anything & then some.

I'll check out the article you sent - apparently I did miss it.

We checked the seals all around the boat this year. We had a cuddy window that was leaking so resealed that. We haul it out every year, winterize it and store it as dry as possible in our wet climate :) Hubby made some custom screens to put in the windows so we can open them without mice or whatever crawling in. Seems to help with air circulation. We tarp it and use Dryz-Air to keep mildew to a minimum.

Enjoy the summer!
