Shiny new boat! I like how the top joins the windshield. It looks like you'll stay fairly dry even with lots of spray coming over the bow.

Good luck with her!

Well, I guess it's my age that's taught me to have patience. The lake was rough and the wind was a blowin. I took a picture but photobucket is down again. No splash today. I tried the Marina ramp which would have been fine except low and behold it was closed for repairs. Just as well, there's only about a mile of smooth water around there and it would have been a really boring day.

Photobuckets back up, here's what the lake looked like this morning. If you look close at the dock it's twisted from a wave that just hit it and that guy standing there just about fell into his boat. It's decieving in the pic but it's just about to whitecap. Another half hour and it would be really nasty.

That island out there isn't supposed to be an island, it's the end of the break wall.

I'm not sure if I'll need one yet. They say the motor should troll down to about 1.25 mph and do it all day long. We'll see how it is after the motor has 10 hours on it. I contemplated puttign a Minn-Kota Terrova for the bow but I'm holding back on the order until I see how it fishes without it.

I'm not sure what if any design changes Merc did to the 2011 4 strokes. This one is the quietest motor I have ever heard and it's more compact than the ones that I'd looked at from prior years. It weighs in at a scant 248lbs. I was joking with the guy at the dealership saying "Hey, I didn't order a kicker" when I saw how small it was. It turns a 12x22 prop on a 1.83:1 gearcase so it should scoot pretty well @ 6000 rpm.

If you find the need to troll slower and don't want to add a kicker you could try a pair of "Buggy Bags" from this guy,...

http://www.amishoutfitters.com/catalog.htm

I have a pair that I run off the mid-ship cleats on my 16 footer, Even when I'm using the kicker it helps keep the front of the boat from swinging to much,....

Everything they sell is well made and very popular among the Lake Erie crowd, A fishing partner of mine turned me on to them and I am happy,..

Just a thought that might save the need for the kicker or the bow-mount,........

Thanks for the info, I've used something similar in the past. The coolest way to troll is with a bowmount trolling motor and remote control. I had that on my 18' and it was sweet but the drawback is hauling it out every night to charge the batteries. I had Rolls Group 27's up front and even with those I still had to be in by 2:00pm or they wouldn't be fully charged at 4:00am the next morning.

Sometimes I use my bow mount to steer the boat while I leave the kicker locked and use it just for forward propulsion,.....

I used 5 gallon buckets until I broke down and bought the buggy bags,....lol..

Hey, don't knock the 5 gal bucket trick. I was fishin and catchin so it was all good to me. LOL.

I had the Terrova on my 14' and a Powerdrive V2 on my 18' Monark both had remotes and autopilot. I always left the main motor down and it kept me very straight. If the wind came up I'd use the main to correct my course and just let the bow motor pull the boat. I had 800 RCA with the Rolls batteries but the payback is in the charge time.

We'll see in a couple of weeks how it shapes up.

Teamster, I've been pondering a reset. I was having a lot of fun building that thing. I've got my eye open for shop space that I can get cheap on a 3 year lease.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

I've seen guys use them before. I takes a 10amp charger 8-10 hours to bring back 6-8 hours of trolling time on two Group 27 deep cycles. Those are big batteries and not your norm. Most folks use trolling motors for manuevering in and around shorelines. I ran mine up and down the lake most of the time. This is where a kicker motor is more logical. Problem is that it's so much easier to keep a boat on track if your pulling it so the bow mount motor is the ticket if you want to relax.

I think if I had enough of the panels I could make better use of the batteries but I'm not sure how many it would take. I could do the calcs and figure it out I guess.

Thanks for the info.

Splash Day, at the lake early this morning trying to beat the rain..

SplashDay002.jpg

On the water --

SplashDay003.jpg

5 mph at 1500 RPM - At 650 it's trolling at 1.5 mph.

SplashDay004.jpg

I pulled into the dock and was skimming down the edge perfectly when a couple of kids decided to help the old man and grabbed my boat thinking I was having problems. I thanked them because they're hearts were in the right place and that's rare these day's. Glad I had the fenders out when they slammed me into the dock. No harm done.

After 2 hours of going between 1000 and 2500 rpm I opened it up briefly to 4500 rpm. The boat came up on the pad (yes this boat has a delta pad) nicely and after a little triming I was holding steady at 28mph. I did that a couple of times then caught a glimps of the weather overlay on the HDS and saw rain about 20 minutes away so I headed in.

All total I got right about 3 hours of breakin time on the motor. The boat handles well but you can tell it's short by the way it gets moved around by the waves. It's just something I'll need to get used to.

Comming off the trailer was easy I just touched the brakes and it was launched. The rope got caught under the bunk mounts so I had to mess with that but other than that it was easy. Pulling it out was even easier. I didn't need to go as deep with it and this thing is so light I just cranked it on with the winch. Next time I'll drive it on.

Great stuff Steve. There's nothing quite like a new boat and a successful first splash! Congratulations...

She looks amazing behind that rig and you're already on the water to boot.

It's nice getting a heads up from the weather overlay. Make sure to take some pics of the first fish you land :)

Awesome!!!

1.5 mph is about perfect crawler harness speeds,......

Does the Merc have the trolling feature that allows for setting it in 100 rpm increments???,....I forget what they call it,....

That would be Smartcraft and yes it does. Smartcraft is NEMA 2000 and it interfaces with the Lowrance HDS-8 that I have. I haven't hooked it up yet, I'm waiting for the interface module from Merc.

Re: Glen-L 21' Canyon Cruiser - Aluminum

Named the new boat this weekend. I was trolling at about 550rpm (about 1.75mph) and watching the tips of the poles dance when I thought of the name.. "Pole Dancer" and so it is. I had one person tell me it was inappropriate and to that I responded. Feel free to name your boat which you don't have anything you want, when you get your mind out of the gutter and learn to fish which you will never do, you can criticize me. Mom, took it pretty well.
