Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Maxed out stroker? If you use stock heads and swap them with a set of AFR's you could gain 110 horse if you have the intake and exhaust to match.
Exactly my point again... where is the HP? What RPM does the torque appear at?
The heads choke the engine. Also high rpm engines normally act like crap at low rpms,IE big cam big carb floods and fouls plugs Hence the constant raping the throttel to clean them out.If you want to run a stroker build a 10grand bottom end set up for 6000 top. It'll last forever.Stay away from light tension race rings they use oil. Also most race engines are built loose to keep drag down.Street engines are built tight for longer life.Build the engine for the rpm you need to run,Youll be a lot happier.

Now this I agree with... figure out first what RPM you'll be running at, and then choose/build the engine to match.

You could always go fuel injection, low compression and turbo.High horse when needed Tame engine when you dont.Warning most whine and if popoff is unmuffeled loud.

i'd stay away from a high rpm set-up just so you don't have to listen to it. the high rpm whine gets old pretty quick.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Maybe it's been said earlier in the thread, but one thing you may want to think about when selecting your engine/drive package is the type of boat you're putting it in. The boat is recreation boat, not a speed boat. The hull isn't designed to go fast. In fact, it may even be unsafe at speeds over say 50mph+. Check out the differences on the go fast boats and it will be readily apparent. I really think you should rethink that stroker combination. I personally don't feel it's a good choice. Either go with a run-of-the-mill small block 350, or go big block 454.

Just my 2 cents...

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Sea Rays are pretty much the classic deep-vee hulls, so I do think it would be safe at any speed the engine could push it to (conditions permitting) I don't think it would hit anything close to race boat speed with the same propulsion.

The only way to go really fast would be to provide enough thrust to plane the bulk of the hull completely out of the water, so hull drag isn't a factor. I'm thinking the nature of Oops' hull mods, where the hull got longer without getting proportionally wider (or putting a pad on) will limit how far it can plane upwards.

I think we're going back to the question on what he's going to use it for... does he want quiet power, or top speed, or pulling power, or fuel economy?

Or as is more likely, all of the above? :D

He wants to be able to zip along at 80 mph! Cruise some where around 50. Pull 4 or 5 skiers up without any problem. Tow a barge full of Corona. Putt around at 2 mph and only spend $20 for fuel for the weekend. You guy's make it sound like he's asking too much.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

a lot of great posts here......keep em coming....this is really intelligent boat comversation......and yes no klu is totally correct.....i want it all. :D

thats why i say boats are all a trade off.

prop slip calcs on the stroker say 100 mph.......( fat chance ) so ....say 60 or even 70 on a good day when the stars are in line.

change the prop....pull your skiers. .....at night putt with yer babe.......sone of the major things i wanted to do is totally sound proof the boat.....thats allready in the works....and will be very quiet when done

There's no (reliable) replacement for displacement. To get that much boat to a respectable speed and still be able to cruise around, you need a mild engine with a big cid. A small block whether 350, 383, 400 or whatever is going to need a much more radical cam profile and higher compression to get your top end. Niether are good for longevity or bottom end. You can run a big ci engine with a milder cam and lower compression and have a flatter torque curve.

You can try to lighten up the displacement by . . .

filling all available voids with Helium gas:D

Is you bud cheap? I'm thinking of putting in a gas tank under the deck when I replace it.

man i was gonna say that.. man this job is getting in the way of my horsing around time...

here is a short play about waterskiing with OOPS:D

OOPs - hey, who wants to water ski behind my big boat.

I-boaters - ooh ooh.. I do.. pick me.. how many can you pull?

OOPS- well i usually start with 4 but end up with just one.

I-boaters - what happens to the other 3? do they fall down cause of the 425 hp turbine..

OOPs- naw.. they get turned into chum.

OOPS - Since I finished my boat, the shark population has just exploded. this lake is now the premier lake for shark fishing in Canada.:p

I-boaters - on second thought, we'll just sit out in our own boats drinking corona and fishing for shark.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

If you want reliability and hp look no further than the small block chevy 350. Bore it .60 over and you're an instant 383. You can pump a 383 close to 500hp with a good set of heads, mild cam, tuned port injection, scavenging exhaust and a programable chip in the computer. It will never have the torque of a big block but with the right prop you'll blow the doors of the competition and they'll never hear you comming. Want more, supercharge it, (no whine and instant on).

My dad built a Glen L boat (el capitan) and put a 389 pontiac in it. The record was 8 skiers at 30 mph. The boat was glass over wood with a solid Oak chine and stringers. The boat weighed so much that after a year of towing it up to the lake and back you couldn't open the car doors while the trailer was hitched up. He was turning a three blade 13"x13" bronze prop.

By the way, 8 was the record only because that's all the skiers we could find at that triumphant moment when my dad finally said "O.K., you got one shot".

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

This is some great engine discussion, but I haven't seen how you are going to get that into the water.

You could have 600 ponies coming out at 10000's of rpm, but if your prop can't handle it you are wasting time and $$$$. Once you get north of 350~400 HP you are probably going to have to leave the off the shelf stuff behind in favor of custom rigs. Not saying that is a bad thing, just a costly thing.

I think consulting a prop guru before final decisions on the engine would be a good step just to make sure that you can put all that power into the water.
