Re: Land of the Oppressed

If there was a market for non-smoking restaraunts in South Africa somebody would have opened one. Better yet, you found an opportunity and could have cornered the market and become a gizzilionare - see what an opportunity your gov has robbed you of?

I haven't found any body that wants to buy my widgets. Let's pass a law forcing people to buy my widgets.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT SMOKING! IT IS ABOUT FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND PRIVATE PROPERTY. It is sad that people have a hard time seeing that. It virtually guarantees a less free tomorrow.

The day they come after your boat, how many non-boaters do you think are going to stand up for you? Very few. Unfortunately most people only care when they are on the receiving end.

Re: Land of the Oppressed

My beliefs on the actual hidden danger in the air is not cigaretts. Here is something to think about.

Several years ago diesel fuel smoke has been proven to cause way more damage to ones lungs than cigarette smoking.

Jet fuel is a high grade of diesel fuel. When just one commerical jet flies, it burns thousands of pounds of fuel in just one day easily. Now when you have several thousand of these planes flying around dumping their exhaust into the atmosphere every hour, Where is that stuff going?

I remember the day after 9/11, the air was much cleaner, the sky was clearer, you could smell the fresh air!

Just maybe this is the hidden cause of so many health issues. Oh yes I forgot, all that black gritty stuff on your car the next day after you washed it, I think it is jet exhaust that has settled down to the ground. Does anyone know of any studies on this? I don't know of any. And if it was a definite fact that this is our main health problem creator, they won't do anything about it because it is their main mode of transportation

This country should send out a basic message. Don't infringe on my rights and I won't infringe on yours. All voters are adults and have their right to make their own decisions. I don't push my habits on anyone and I sure wish they wouldn't tell me what habits that I can have.

I do agree that it is unjust on fines on certain violations. Moving violations should be increased by 3 or 4 times of what they are now. The cost of living has gone up more than what the fines have. Just maybe if one had a fine of $2,000 for running a lite or stop sign, more people would be less likely to take the chances.

I was a smoker, 2 pack a day. Lost my mom to it also, Dad died from cynide poisoning from spraying Imron paint. He smoked 2 packs a day and never had any health problems.

For every life, there is a death. This cannot be changed, it is a fact. We must realize that we cannot keep everyone alive. With this in mind, I would rather enjoy my life the way I see fit instead of some liberal telling me what I want.

Almost like going into a hardware to get what you want and the salesman tells you what you need. You get home and realize it is the wrong item? But the professional said it is what you needed? DUH DUH DUH!

Re: Land of the Oppressed

Have you ever noticed (myself being an exception), the majority of the people that complain the most about others smoking, are reformed smokers. Many people are against smoking, but the ones that complain, and campaign the most against it are usually ex-smokers. I am a firm believer, that they cannot stand smelling the smoke, and not having one themselves. I know, that I myself will never get over wanting a cigarette, after a good meal, during a tense moment, or when I see or smell one. Some people are so da*ned weak, that for them to give up smoking, they demand that they be eliminated from their presence. :D :D :D :D

--------------------------------------------------
"In a bar that allows smoking you as a non-smoker choose to be next to the smoker. The government has no right to tell people they can't allow legal behavior on private property. You have no right to force your views oabout smoking on that pub owner or his patrons. "
--------------------------------------------------
That argument would only hold water if there were actually a choice. Not many bars that ban smoking.

--------------------------------------------------
"THIS IS NOT ABOUT SMOKING! IT IS ABOUT FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND PRIVATE PROPERTY. It is sad that people have a hard time seeing that. It virtually guarantees a less free tomorrow."
--------------------------------------------------

Surely I and my children have a right to also choose not to inhale your secondhand smoke or have that lazy coil of smoke drifting into our eyes from the smoke smouldering in the ashtray?
You are right though, this is not about smoking, this is about freedom. My freedom to not smoke, my freedom to go to public places without having to breathe cigarette smoke. I have no beef with any smokers. It's their choice. Just don't force me to have to share it.

I mean the government legislates against people urinating in public, defecating in the street why not legislate against smoking in public indoor areas where it infringes on other peoples freedom?

Re: Land of the Oppressed

what other unhealthy things should be outlawed?
alchohol? fast food? being overweight? burning
fossil fuels?
there are so many things that negatively affect
our health way more than second hand smoke...
why attack smokers? PC crud!
how about you arrest all the fat people?
heart disease from being overweight is a million
times more serious problem as far as costs to
taxpayers and loss of life. maybe the gov't should
force everyone to eat the same exact foods....
u get a ticket/fine for eating a cheeseburger etc.
wake up and smell the BS!

This doesn't have anything to do with you rights or freedoms. I don't see anywhere in the Constitution that gives someone the right smoke in a public place. A restruant is a public place. No one is saying it is illegal to smoke, they are just saying you can't smoke in a public setting.

This law was voted in by your representatives. Did you call them or in any other way communicate with your representative that you didn't agree with this law before they voted on it? Obviously enough people let them know that they agreed that smoking in should not be allowed that it was passed.

Kenny, I here ya! Over here in NJ they tried to pass the public smoking ban but it failed. Now I am not a smoker never have, personally I think it is a disgusting habit, and as an asthmatic it effects me everytime. However, the GOVERNMENT HAS NO OBILGATION TO PROTECT ME OR YOU FROM DOING STUPID THINGS! The more people who realize this the better off we will become. For you and us it will probably get worse before it gets any better.

Over here in Jersey there is a municipality that has banned smoking on the beach. You can't get any more air circulation than that for pete's sake.

There is a movement over here called G.R.I.P. It stands for Get Rid Of Incumbant Politicians. Maybe after we throw them out year after year they will start doing our bidding instead of being selfserving to the lobbyist.

That is another reason Im so glad to live in Arkansas. That BullShiit would never fly here. They tried it, it failed miserably. Why? Because we dont have the liberal, big government, ideaology here. And we understand the individuals rights.

I personally think that it is not up to the government to tell citizen what to do on private properly, when the activity is legal. Hell lets just make everything illegal.

Alcohol causes people to drive drunk, cars cause pollution, cow farts cause global warming, pigs carry trichinosis, sodas have caffeine which is addictive, some potato chips have olestra which give you the squirts, Women drive men crazy!, Children financially break their parents. So lets make it all illegal.

Some of you need to quit being wusses, and suck it up. If my smoking bothers you, I will respect you and not smoke around you, but you cant follow me around either.

Re: Land of the Oppressed

We all make the frequent mistake of thinking that we are alone. But just take comfort in knowing that what is said in the liberal media, is about all you'll hear, and it does not reflect mainstream American opinoin anymore. Since 9/11 happened, many liberals are seeing the assaults made by thier party, and seeing-thru the PC white-noise to the real issues. They may hate Bush with a passion, but they may have been in NYC on that day----Or have a son overseas fighting for our security---- or are just more inteligent than thier media outlets give them credit for being!
So far, every attempt at dragging down our flag has been a fumble for the enemy, and those that do battle for them, including those seeking "regeme change" in thier own country in spite of it, or even to aid it.
There may be gobs of liberals out there, with some really whacky ideas, but they are American (for the majority).
We need them to step-forward, and support an administration of the oposing party...At least in the short term. We must unite as American countrymen and show our troops a unified effort. That way, they can do likewise, thus win the battle much more efficiantly.
I wanna see Stu come home in one piece---and one peace! victorious,of course.

Re: Land of the Oppressed

wvit100,

Your post is sort of ironic coming from a state built by Tobacco. Are you all down there prepared to cough up all that wealth made off selling tobacco? Are you all prepared to give up all those jobs? All those farms? All those public works built with the taxes? Na, you just want both ways.

A bar or restaraunt is private property. There is nothing public about it. It is not owned by the public (i.e., the gov). People do not have to go there. You do not have to go there and you have no right telling the owner he can no longer allow a legal activity that has been conducted in his estabilishment for 200+ years!

Smoking is not the point anyway. Again, people usually don't care about other peoples freedom until they fall into the crosshairs.

Sad that people can't see it. It doesn't hurt them so it must be a "good thing" to tell people what to do with their private property.

Hey Kenny - I totally understand. Boston is as bad or worse than NY. People from other parts of the country don't understand how bad things can get when they don't stand up to these intrusions into our feedoms. MA is geetting to look more and more like a facist state every day.

SS - you may be on to something. I grew up near Boston's Logan airport and Boston's main electrical plant that burned oil. The cancer rate in my old neighborhood is way out of proportion to national averages. I know more people that have died of cancer and lukemia of all age groups that most people could imagine. But wait, instead, let's tell pub and restraunt owners they can no longer let people smoke. That will solve everything! After all, we the ellite liberals of Boston don't live anywhere near the airport or Edison plant. It just infurates me.

Rudeafrican, I agree totally.

Nathan, you say that you will respect the non-smokers, and not smoke around them. Well, not all smokers think that way. I assure you that I am no wuss, I just don't want to breathe some unhealthy crap that just came out of some smokers lungs. Its not my choice to breathe it, but unfortunately, there are some places that I HAVE to visit where I have no choice but to breathe this stuff.

If they can find a way to contain all that second hand smoke, to where we non-smokers, (I have never smoked), don't have to breathe it, then I don't have a problem with the smokers. But they haven't found a way to do that yet now have they.

We won't even discuss the idiots, that I see every morning, tossing lit cigarettes out the window while they are driving. I don't think I have to tell anyone the many reasons that this is stupid.

And again, I will state, I dont give a rats butt who smokes,.......I just don't want to be forced to breathe that crap......Period.

Now y'all have a fine day now. :)

I don't want to breath exhaust fumes from cars and boats which are equally obnoxious and unhealthy as second hand smoke from tobacco. In addition, they contribute to a global climate change that affects every living thing on this planet. Therefore, I recommend we pass a law outlawing peronal use of internal combustion engines.

See where it all leads? You think I'm wrong? Read a little history.

Re: Land of the Oppressed

and how worried are you about general air quality
Carp et. al.? do you drive an electric car or ride
a bike around? you don't like the way smoke smells
and makes you cough? well I don't like the way the
air tastes/smells when I stand behind a bus.
ain't I due fresh clean air like you?
what's the difference guys? a factory down the road can emit 100 times more pollution but it
employs your niehbors and contributes to local
tax base.
is the same, only differnent IMHO. can't have it
both ways (as previously "well" stated)
