Re: Land of the Oppressed

Well, its official,

As of today, 8/1/03, it was reported that 17,500 jobs were lost due the smoking ban here in NYC.

That adds to 300,000 people who have yet to find a job since they lost their previous job due to the terror attacks on 9/11/01.

Thats 17,500 jobs in 7 days!

Street cleaners as well as bartenders and waitress' have been laid off due to closings of establishments that just could not survive 1 week without the revenue that the smokers contribute to their business, or now the lack of cigarette butts on the street to keep these people who cleaned them up, gainfully employed.

The economy of NYC just cannot survive this blow, what with all that has happened here in the last 3 years.

Besides that, all that money that was promised to NYC after 9/11, well the citizens of NYC have yet to see one cent of it, yet Hillary Clinton had 9/11 funds diverted to the Red Cross in her new home town of Chapiquita, NY, to componsate for the loses of 9/11 in her community, but no one from Chapiquita were killed that day, yet Hillary supports the smoking ban!

I'll bet the citizens of Chapquita support the smoking ban, what with $1.1million injected into their region, for no just cause , they can afford to take a hit in the employment rate in that community, but the rest of NY cannot!

The town of Garden City, NY, lost 26 people that day, yet have recieved nothing from the federal government for those loses!

Some of those families are now on welfare, and suffering great depression, yet no assistance!

NYC has not recieved any federal monies to get people working again promised after the 9/11 attacks.

NYC has not been reinbursed for the costs of 9/11 yet.

But the people of NYC must now try to struggle with inadequite fire and police protection.

150 new police officers were hired to replace the 21 lost on 9/11, and those officers were already in the acadamy on 9/11, yet NYC has only been able to get 70 new fire fighters to replace the 343 that were lost on 9/11, and they too were in the acadamy at the time of the attacks, because the City doesn't have the money to send another class of cadets through the acadamy's, and has had to close 2 firehouses to cut costs!

So how is it that this law that restricts smoking is going to help everyone?

It ain't workin here, and its only been 1 week!

Kenny

Ya but Kenny I don't have to smell the smoke any more... of coarse, all the places I wanted to go are now CLOSED so I sit home alone eating TV dinners and sipping Bud from the bottle but at least it's smoke free and I live a little longer (maybe) as a result. Of coarse it will be a misarble existence bcause ALL MY RIGHTS WILL HAVE BEEN TAKEN AWAY. But like I said, I won't have to smell smoke!

Hey Ralph,

You call that freedom?

I don't.

Also seems to me that no one looked at the consequences of their legislation.

Who is going to put these people back to work?

And when?

The economy of the city can not deal with this.

Now was not the time?

But here in NY State, it's an election year for the Legislators, so they had to get votes from somewhere!

Hopefully, this legislation will cause these politicians to loose their seat up there in Albany, and then they too can experience unemployment first hand!

Kenny

MSNBC reported that the NYC restaraunst and bars have lost as much as 50% of their business since the smoking ban went into effect. Plase outsie the ban area have report enormous increases in business as a reult of the NYC ban.

Just goes to show that government intervention in the free market can have a devistating impact.

But hey, at least you can into a smoke free environment in the few places that remain open :D

Yeah Ralph,

But after a hectic day like today, I need a drink, but I can't get one...all the bars are CLOSED!

Not only can't I smoke now, but I can't get a drink either!

Everone is going to NJ or CT to smoke and drink.

This law is not just in effect in NYC, but the whole state!

Kenny

Re: Land of the Oppressed

Just an up-date...

As of 08/25/03, 39,600 people have lost their job due directly to the smoking ban here in New York and climbing!

Another 12 bars have closed in the 5 Bouroughs of NYC, and numerous more throughout the state!

And remember, thats on top of 300,000 people who lost their jobs immediatly following the attacks of 9/11, who have not been able to find work yet!

NYC is also still waiting for the funds promised from Washington!

There are only 16 days left until the 3 anniversary of the attacks and still waiting for relief here, but those who suffered loses in the tornados this spring in the Mid-West have already been paid by Washington!

Some law, but I guess they will all have to die of hunger before anyone gives a hoot!

Kenny

Re: Land of the Oppressed

I veiw this smoke ban deal as a way to generate $$$$ for local govment. Think about traffic tickets and quotas. Guaranteed revenue source.
Now, enact no smoke law, write some tickets, collect revenue.
Trial lawyers will love this too as some folks will contest the fine.
I will never be convinced that some pol "cares or is concerned about my health being compromised from second hand smoke"
