Re: Most mispelt words in boat ads thread

Non punctuation is almost as annoying as bad spelling!!

they could at least capitalize between the sentences right oh well i guess thats the way it goes i agree it drives me nuts when they dont punctuate though it saves on keystrokes when its all one big paragraph

We have a fish in Australia called a 'tailor'. I have seen it in shops labelled 'tailer'. When I pointed the incorrect spelling out to the shop owner he said "So what? People know what it means."

I'm always quite surprised right along with the post's author whenever they proclaim the discovery of leeks in their boat. Hmmm, how do those leeks get in there?

Around here a lot of people go fishing for some "brim"...they usually end up catching bream.

Tastes just the same...!

Happy boating!

Re: Most 'mispelt' words in boat ads thread

I answered an ad two months ago on CL for a
"69Jonnson Moter"
text: 1968 Jonson moter, rop stator no moter. anteek?

There was no phone number listed, just the CL contact link.
He put 'garage' under location. It was listed under General Items for Sale, not boats as well.
I found it searching the word Stator, looking for parts for another project.

I first thought no one could be that bad at spelling then I called, after about 10 emails back and forth to get an address or phone number. It took 15 minutes on the phone to figure out where he was, his response to my asking what his address is was "I don't know, somewhere near here". It took me asking him to walk outside and tell me what he saw to get figure out he's near an airport.
To make a long story short, he was that clueless, the motor was mint, he had no clue what it fit or did, only that he got it from his dad's garage who had just died. When I got there, I checked the compression, looked it over and asked what was the bottom line, (the ad had no price listed), he tells me he wants $7,000 for it, I just looked at him and said that's not going to happen in his lifetime, he then said how about $25.
He went from $7,000 to $25 in three seconds. I handed him $25, picked up the motor and left. It runs perfect, needed nothing.
The seller was beyond strange, he never looked at me the whole time I was there, he kept walking around in circles talking to himself, and I think made a few comments to the tree standing there. He had probably 100 facial piercings, and was tattooed heavily, he had some sort of giant grommets or rings in his ear lobes that made him look like a monkey.

He did mention that he couldn't figure out why I showed up about the motor, he couldn't figure out why he had it listed for 3 months and no one called or came to look at it. I told him I guess I was the only one that could decipher his language or figure out where "Somewhere near here" was. I just shook my head and left with my new motor.

Sounds like a few tweekers, meth heads I have run into.

......Either meth head or inbred.

You find all kinds buying on Craigslist, I had a boat listed a while back, a guy came to look at it, gave me a deposit, and never showed back up, the phone number he gave me was no good and a month later he hadn't shown up again. I relisted it and sold it again. The original guy never came back.
I answered another ad last summer and had the guy tell me he didn't want to sell the boat. After I drove a hour to see it and most likely leave with it. He tells me he just wanted to see what it was worth. He's lucky I've mellowed out over the years. I was not a happy camper after driving an hour for nothing.

The best one was an ad I answered back in June, the ad read "Alluminium moter bote wit/trailor" with no pics.
I knew by the ad titleI was in for an experience, but curiosity got the better of me. There was no email contact, just a phone number. I called, asked what make boat it was and how long was it. He couldn't answer either question, when I asked where it was located he said it's in his back yard. It took me 10 minutes to get an address out him. I then simply asked what make was on the title, he for some reason couldn't do that. I told him that I'm not driving anywhere to look at some unknown boat being sold by someone too uncooperative to simply tell me what brand it is. ( I was nice and didn't make any comment to the ad, or the spelling, or inbreeding for that matter). At this point my opinion of the seller was dropping fast.

After another 10 minutes he finally says hold on I'll go look at the boat and see what make it is. He comes back on and says it's a Load Rite. I asked if he read that on the trailer, he said no, its written on the boats 'frame'.
A few simple questions later and I was pretty sure he was just clueless and not a scammer, so I took a ride.

The boat was not aluminum, it was lapstrake fiberglass, the only aluminum on it was the windshield frame and rub rail.
The trailer was fairly new, and the outboard looked decent although older. The boat turned out to be a rather decent looking old 15' Sea King, (which was obvious by the two huge name plates screwed to each side).

I asked if his $400 price was firm, he said he needed $75 to sign his kid up for something, I said then $75 does it, he said sold. He brings out the title, and the title is for a Dodge pickup. I tell the guy he's got the wrong title, he insists it's the title he got with the boat. I can see that the title matches his pickup parked right next to the boat. It took me another 15 minutes to convince him that the title he handed me was for his truck, not the boat. He finally goes back inside and after some loud squabbling with someone inside, he comes out with a pile of titles and says here, pick out the right one. I dug through the stack of about 40 titles and other personal papers he handed me and found the title for the boat. The stack included several birth certificates and other personal certificates or permits.

My guess was he nor his wife could read.

Skeg as:
Skag, skigg

And poor Carl Kiekhaefer's (Mercury) name as everything from:
Kickenhoffer to Keefheffer.

And the one that get me, and I see it all over the place, is "Whalla" or "Walla". It's "Voila"! As in, "All this boat needs is some TLC and, voila!, it'll be ready to go!"

Re: Most mispelt words in boat ads thread

I seen these lately:
Bote and moter, new trailor cuppling, ankor, biller sale, noterized, tiers need replace, berrings need greese, grease spinner things on weels, light balls dont work on side, stator motor geers bad, and one guy that stated his tralor wench was moater podered.

I spent 20 minutes the other day trying to figure out what some idiot was emailing me about for his outboard. He emailed me in response to an outboard for sale ad wanting to know if I had a hat for sale to fit his motor, when I finally got him to call me, he kept on about a hat, "You know, that hat thing on top of the motor" I at first thought maybe he needed a hood but he kept on and then called it the squid looking thing with the rope hanging out of it. We finally figured out he meant the recoil assembly on his 35hp Johnson. We need an idiots guide to part names I guess now. The last I looked there's no hat or squid listed in the parts list. All I could picture is some idiot on the other end of the phone with an outboard cover on his head.

I think they've made computers too simple to use, even the illiterate have them now.
