Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

I actually had a muffler bearing fail. The 3000GT's have a diverter valve in the exhaust that allows it to bypass the muffler allowing for more power and louder exhaust note. The bearing/bushing failed due to heat.

Putting off muffler bearing replacement can lead to the widget arm on the manifom failing, which causes a loss of magneto reluctance. Very costly.

Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

I suggest you stay off of Ebay if you're looking for a muffler bearing. You might save ten bucks, but I know you have to machine them flat just to get them to make good contact with the muffler or exhaust tubes (if you aren't running mufflers).

If you use the wrong muffler bearing, you might cause some back pressure, and then some exhaust will leak past at the joints, and it'll look like you blew a seal.

If you are out at sea all day, you don't want anyone to think you blew a seal.

I believe you're talking about counter-rotating muffler bearings.;)

And I don't want to hear about people at sea blowing seals:D:D
It might only be a defective 710 cap...and that's an easy fix

Absolutely
One word of caution.

there are 2 types of muffler bearings.

One with and one without a Kenerbly Pin.

Trying to swap installs results in mag failure like jtmarten said.
It's a result of the pin not touching the warfull pump that sends harmonic interference through the arm, breaking it.
You need to use the pin setup if it was there. If not, then a adapter plate
needs to be machined with a .064" "RUB TIP" to hit the warfull pump. The plate needs to be a min of .030" thick and then the bearing itself must be machined thinner the same amount.
Good luck

now what kind of brazing rodr does one use with a muffler bearing, welding gives off too much heat, and warps the darn thing.

Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

I refuse to fix mine. I have a simple flux capacitor mounted under the dash in my boat. I can go a comfortable speed even with a failed bearing....... I am afraid if I change the muffler bearing on my 2 stroke I will be forced to re-adjust my valves again....... new muffler bearing with the proper valve adjustment could trigger the flux capacitor......... I would then run the risk of hitting 88 mph...............THEN  who knows where I would end up!

You have to get one of those infomercial cold solder guns. They won't warp the bearings.

And if you do remove the heads to check the rear main seal, make sure to capture the piston return springs. They have a nasty habbit of sproinging away if you're not ready for them.

See, this is exactly why I love this Site, You can Learn so much! Like said above, If you are changing one you should also change the other. I didn't know that my newly installed Pinckney Valves weren't Coast Guard approved. I better replace that.......Lucky I read this!

Also have to watch the Giga watts. Or was it Jigga watts? I can't even remember how many you need.

Man the 80's are sorta fuzzy...;)

Welding muffler bearings is a bad idea. The heat will cause the packed grease to melt and poor fusion will result. The proper way to do this is to advance or retard the motor timing until you get a big backfire. This will make the bearings molecules change and form a bond with the exhaust pipe.

Thought I'd mention the muffler bearings made 15 years ago are not compatible with E10 or bio diesel. Get a manual before attempting any removal or repair. You can find them on ebay sometimes.

Use a silver (not a fake stainless steel)butter knife when that happens.

Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

Maybe I should change my muffler bearing before we go snipe hunting. I don't want to scare them off due to a rattling bearing.
BTW, anyone know where I can find a thermostat for an old Corvair? I was told I should probably change it while working on the muffler bearing.

FYI you don't need to change the t/stat. you can remove it and clean it. did you know you can adjust it for whatever temp you want ??

just use a screwdriver and turn the screw until the back face is level with the groove in the housing while it's submerged in a morning cup of winter blend coffee. DON'T use summer blend as it will make the adjustment about 27 degrees off. Coffee needs to be right from the pot with no additives.
If you find your still lacking enough heat you can add the candle adapter in the back seat and then you'll roast inside.

Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

take a closer look, the spangler tirx aparatus has a hairline crack in it. letting the exhaust gasses backflow, not letting the bearing turbine reach full velocity
