Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

It was the German car makers in the 50's that first pioneered muffler bearings.
Apparently they found the ratio of mechanical/precision complexity per mile/km travelled was too low as compared to their North American rivals.
As a result they introduced it on all Mercedes and Audi products.
However it was BMW that really brought it to the maintenance and unfortunately, repair, forefront in their 80's products.

Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

I remember doing a boat load of extra duty after a 1st class sent me for a bucket of steam returning to a bunch of laughter only to produce a bucket of water shrugging my shoulders and telling him it must have condensed :D
It was worth it the laughter was even louder but no longer directed at me:cool:

Funny thing I never thought I would be adding exhaust fluid to a truck for real.

The smoke in a bottle is a good one.

Well, of course, that'd be 50% silver, 20%brass, 20% copper, and the all important 10% dilithium. The muffler bearing application requires this alloy with a flubber flux coat. It's not common, but keep lookin', you'll find it. The torch required here is the methane-sulphurhydroxide-oxy. If you cannot find this gas at your local welding supply house, it's also produced by the mamallian digestive tract, and there's a kit to simplify it's collection on e-bay. The search phrase to use is 'bungmokeyfire'. Zip ya right to it.

BTW, anyone know where I can find a thermostat for an old Corvair? I was told I should probably change it while working on the muffler bearing.
JC Nitwitney there on the the same page and interchange with the 68 Vdubs

When all is said and done muffler bearings are easy. But when was the last time you had to buy a finnagan pin for one of our boats.

All this talk has me wondering: Left hand, right hand, pipe vs. standard-metric, etc.,

Now, dang it, I have to go check everything. along with the knibblin pins Johnson rods and the wire harness smoke.

Thanks! I think.:redface::D

Nope. They have to use a Right handed Claven. A left handed Claven can be used if used in conjunction with a right handed, metric cresent wrench.

I have found that changing the headlight fluid and the blinker fluid is easier while swapping out a muffler bearing. Of course you have to use a flat edge phillips screwdriver for those.

Re: My Muffler Bearing Finally Went Out

FEWWW.... I'm glad this post is still up and running!

I need your help guys.

As many of you old timers and car enthusiast know, Chrysler, in a Pseudo-German lets make the world different for no particular reason move, made several of their older vehicles with left handed lug nuts back in the day.

Well it goes without saying that a left handed tire iron is needed to remove these, and of course they are rare since most people converted to all right handed lugs.

In any case my buddy needs one of these tire irons, so if any of you happen to have one of these kicking around, and wouldn't mind parting with it, that would be much appreciated.

Money is no object, as long as you don't want any more than the change in his ash tray (he is currently waiting on the side of the road with a flat hoping I can come up with one of these).

So if you happen to have one, please send it via auto giro to the corner of Ticonderoga and First street (near the tracks). If you include a baloney sandwich, a change of underwear, and a 6 pack, he is willing to sweeten the deal with his favorite Bobby Vinton 8 track, some sun faded fuzzy dice, and one of those Black&Decker 12v car vacs that never really worked.

Thanks!!!

I am still looking for my rad cap on my 68 VW.

We also changed the air in spare tire so the wipers work better.
