First time this piece of property.

Go out back about a hour latter boom, nice size doe.

Just got in from gutting her.

Older son was in school ha, he's supposed to be the deer slayer, he's beside himself ha.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

Nice.

I spent my time out during bow season and never got a close enough shot..... spent time out during rifle season and saw nothing but spike horns and the rules are 3 or more points...... it was nice to see alot of deer and a decent spike horn population.

Now this Saturday is the opening of muzzle loading season and I was lucky enough to draw a rare "anterless" tag. SO....... this Saturday morning I will go to my spot and wait for the oldest doe and hopefully she is within range.

My wife is confident and has made room in the freezer. :)

My wife makes the best venison stew.

Sometimes i take frozen stew on cold Boy scout camp outs. Boil some rice and slop on the stew.

You wouldn't believe it the boys know it's deer but they lick the pot out, fight over it.

Last year was almost my last year due to illness, but i'm ok now.

But i didn't have the strength to hunt, so i drove my son out.

He hit a monster buck, and for 2 weeks in the freezing cold i went looking for it never did find it.

So we didn't have any venison.

Ah pheasants great eating, and lovely the colors.

We here in NJ can take all the does we want.

We are overrun with deer here.

And i live in the woods, 2 years ago when we still had my yellow 100+ pound lab he got skunked.

Funny i had him in the garage and the door down, doing something, can't remember, working on the bench on something, maybe the snowblower cause it threw a connecting rod.

Smelled something funny, and my wife comes, out and starts screeming, i swear i almost had a heart attack, thought someone broke in and was attacking her.

She says wtf can't you smell that.

I said is that a way for you to talk, a 25 year vet. teacher of 5 graders.

I also said you gonna kiss me with that mouth i don't think so.

She just got madder, said he got skunked whats wrong with you.

I said i thought he cut one, won't be the first time. Had him in my truck with the windows up smelled like that never paid it no mind.

Told her we made a deal you own the inside of the house leave the out side and the garage to me.

We had a condo for the dog in the garage carpeted and everything.

He sometimes would paw the door to get out to the garage, to get away from the kids i guess.

So she said, that #$%&%$ dog ain't coming in the house no way.

So i took him out and used maybe 10 cans of tomato juice, on him in the kids
wading pool.

He was not to happy but knew better than to try and nip me.

Had him tied to a tree so he couldn't get out.

He had to spend maybe 2 weeks in the garage till the smell went away, tried everything on him.

He would go nuts when i brought home deer, knew he was gonna get all the fat and bones.

When he did something bad i said i'm gonna put you on the hook.

He knew, would go hid for hours cause he knew what the hook meant, ha.

Jeez i miss that dog. Got a hot dog-dog now.

I think with the bad dog food stuff that went on is what killed him.

So many deer around here and the animal lovers, they rather see the deer, starve to death and get sick than culled out.

I haven't even seen a deer in the woods yet, but muzzle loader opens tomorrow!
We do have two fawns in the backyard garden quite regularly but they are safe for at least another year.;)
Looked out the window this morning to see a fat and sassy coyote asleep in the backyard not 80 yards from the house. This will not be a good habit for him to adopt!!:D

Coyotes die of lead poisoning around here any day of the year. My neighbor the dairy farmer has zero tolerance for them.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

No legal buck today ... only a small 4 point running by (law says 3 points on one side here). Have this week and next week yet for the buck. Then after Christmas it is a month of muzzleloader. So there is lots of time to fill the remaining 3 tags ... freezer is full of elk, but friends want venison, so I will do what I can to help them out!

That's funny.
A friend of mine has a horse farm. When we mow the fields in spring and find the groundhog holes, he sets 5 gallon buckets next the holes. There's always a couple. It's open season at that point. They have never seen the next sunrise after mowing day! Evidently, the closest neighbor to the back field (avid hunter) is quite a shot.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

We have Cayotes here < misspelled i bet.

Who would have believed it in the most populated state.

And when i was scouting the new piece of property that by the way is a 1/4 miles away from my house, i swear i saw a bob cat.

So i whip out the hunting regulation book and sure enough they ask for you to call in any sightings of bob cats.

So i call it in, and leave a message, as i return the phone to the cradle it rings.

I speak to sec. of the assistant director of the fish and wildlife state agency, she says will i hold?

I said sure, Dave Chanda, who i met before says they are all over Jersey but first he heard they are in the area i hunt.

I asked can i shoot them, he said only if i want to be bunk mates with bubba at the state pen.

No shooting bob cats.

I never take a camera but he says if i got a pic of one in the wild they will put it next year in the mag they put out.

The funny thing i've seen giant cat prints on my property, bigger than my hand, i thought, i saw a flash of a big, big cat when i came out my garage a few times.

Fox big, big fox are all over my place. But a bob cat jeez, i don't put my little hot dog, dog outside on the zip line anymore, without me there with her.

And hawks all over, tried to get my dog one time.

Monday is opening day for regular shotgun season.

And i've seen the one. My whole life i've been waiting for this one, and he got cousins just as big.

Just never could get to where there was legal hunting near my place till this year.

Living right next door to me is a doctor, and a lawyer, and i helped them with a bunch of stuff, but i know if i took a shot anywhere near my place, they would be the first one to call the cops.

Good luck people hope you bag the buck of a lifetime, and he's there somewhere.

Never in the history of the US has there been a better chance to pop the one.

I read last year hunters donated more than 3 million pounds of meat to the needy.

Thats alot of people not going hungry in this country.

Thats just deer meat.

What about money we donate ?

So when someone says ewww you hunt, smile and say, "yes i hunt , i'm proud to carry on a time honored tradition".

I'm also proud to have passed on that tradition to my children, and hopefully they will pass it to theres.

My son yesterday did most of the work butchering the deer. He's 16.

I did what i'm finding out is a great job, supervising.

I'm rambling better end this post or the mods will get me.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

There are Bobcats here in VT and a trapping season for them. As far as Coyotes go.... they have attacked people in the woods. Normally the attacked person has been using some deer lure scent and it happens about every two years.

Hopefully in less than 24 hrs I will have one of my tags filled :)
