Remote Oil Filter Issue

The starboard Merc 5.7 EFI engine on our 98 Monterey, has a remote filter issue. Best as I can tell, no oil or very little is flowing through the factory remote oil filter. The engine runs just fine. It runs at 160F, and has 60 PSI when up on plane. The reason I believe there is an issue, is because unlike the port engine oil filter, the starboard one never gets hot.

The filter itself is not the issue, as it has been changed. Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Remote Oil Filter Issue

That is strange. Every boat I have had with the remote oil filter gets the filter nice and hot. I don't have anything to offer but I would be interested to see what the resolution is on this.

Right before the filter is there an oil cooler installed and if so, is there also a temperature difference between the coolers on each engine?

I know, I know but are you sure your checking the oil filter and not the fuel/sep filter

There are no engine oil coolers on either engine.

A fuel filter would not measure about 140F, with a laser temp gauge. :) Yes, I am 100% certain it is the oil filter.

Re: Remote Oil Filter Issue

Seeing as how the hot oil heats the remote oil filter mount and filter, that is strange. Have you tried pulling the filter after a run and verifying hot oil is being adequately pumped up to it?

That is the problem... Neither the filter or its mount are getting hot like the port engine does... Also, the two oil lines going to the remote filter, are not even warm.

This is a stab in the dark, but before you pull the motor it wouldn't hurt to pull the remote lines and check them for obstruction. And if you are really daring you could crank the motor with the filter off and a plastic bag on the housing to see what you get. Just pull the kill switch lanyard and it won't start, but it will crank.
I'd bet it's that casting issue or an obstruction causing the filter bypass to open.

When I said 'remove everything" I meant everything to do with the remote oil filter. I just went out and put a whole in the top of the oil filter, so the oil drains back into the pan. I will report back tomorrow with my findings once I tear it apart.

Too late now, but you coulda just unscrewed it a bit. If it's pumping, it would gush outta there...

I'm not worried about an inexpensive oil filter. It may indeed be pumping, [the filter was full of oil] however the return line may be clogged, or as was suggested, could be blocked off right from the factory. Have to disassemble it to find out.

Re: Remote Oil Filter Issue

Is this a new motor? If it is blocked from the factory, does this mean oil has not been circulating since '98? I think you would have seen other issues by now...

Nope... it,s a 98 with just under 600 hours. No idea how long the oil has not been going threw the filter... It has had regular oil changes for the past two years since I have owned it.

Re: Remote Oil Filter Issue

Need some more help guys:

I took the filter off, and all the oil had drained out of it. Put some rags around the remote oil filter housing, and turned the engine over briefly without starting it. I had lots of oil coming up through the one line. [Not the line in the center of the remote housing, but the one towards the outside] The center line was full of oil still. It did not drain, which tells me the filter drained its oil back into the pan through the pressure line overnight.

I attached a piece of tubing to the center line where the filter threads on, and tried to blow through it and could not. I suspect a blockage somewhere, but am not sure where to go from here.

Re: Remote Oil Filter Issue

I am not familiar with your exact set up, but the ones I have seen have a remote filter mounted where you can reach it easily, and 2 lines that run back to an adapter plate that attaches where a filter normally would. I would take off the remote lines and adapter plate if I could reach it and attach a filter there and run the engine and see if it gets hot. if it does, then you know the remote apparatus is the fault.

I don't know if I am gong to get blasted for saying this but you could try to stick your dipstick down the blocked line. I would disconnect it from the block first if I could. Or if you can try compressed air.

Re: Remote Oil Filter Issue

Just took everything apart, and I am SHOCKED at my findings...

Both oil lines are fine, as are both remote filter housings. [both at the filter and where it attaches to the block] What I did find, is that there was only ONE BOLT holding the "valve assembly" [part # 14] to the block! And.... it was only finger tight.... It's a wonder the whole thing did not come off the block!

Where did the second bolt go, or was it ever there in the first place?!?!... I don't see how it could go anywhere if in fact it was there, as it will not fit through any of the lines. It should have been lying in the bottom of the lower housing, if it simply came loose, and backed out about 8-10 turns... Highly unlikely...

I am about to put it all back together with two bolts this time, and I suspect all will be good again.

I will update again, once its back up and running.
