I have seen some of the through hull conversion kits. From what I can see its some exhaust pipe and a flapper. I can get exhaust pipe anywhere and the tractor supply store sells flappers. Is that all there is to it? I know it doesnt help the power at all but it sounds killer. If I do this will it cause any problems anywhere else?

I like thru hull exhaust too.... just not on my boat, my friend has a Baja with a 5.7 and it sounds great, but an hour on it and I have a head ache, also forget about hearing the stereo... IMHO a 4 cylynder w/ thru hull sounds like a lawnmower on steroids. to each his own.

Yeah.
-Marine exhaust pipe is NOT available 'anywhere'.
-Improper sealing of the transom cutouts could cause leakage and potential core damage.
-Water reversion is possible unless the risers are at least 2 1/2" above the natural waterline.

+1 - I'm afraid that putting a thru-hull on that 470 is going to sound like a Toyota Corolla with glass packs.

I heard one online that had twin 470's it sounded good even only one was running. Maybe because the stroke of the 470 is pretty long. (basically half of a 460 ford). Idk if I'm going to do it for sure. I run Wappapello lake a lot and its more of a fishing lake. Might **** alot of anglers off.

People seeing that will laugh hysterically and possibly loose control of their own boats. . . there is the potential for damage and injury in that sort of situation.

imho, and that's all it is.
if thru hull exhaust gets ya some gain in hp and makes yer boat go faster, great idea, so be it.
other than that, what's the point. if it don't, it's just an annoyance that says, look at me (think leo),

fwiw..... ain't nothing i'm likin more these days that total peace and quite. i think i'm gettin old (er). i don't even turn on the cd player with 'my' music on it.....

I have been in a couple boats with the thru-hull and it was friggin loud - He had the switsh that would shut them off though so that was nice. Myself, I kind of like how the standard exhaust sounds on my boat (260 Mercruiser) - Nice rumble to it (especially at full song) but not annoying. I say leave it alone. I think the 470 would sound like a ricer with a fart can on it.

Yeah I guess because I also build old bobbers with straight pipes I just jump to "oh yeah louder must be better" But I'm kind of an old fart and nothing sounds much worse than a saturn, corrola pick 1. With a big ole chrome muffler hanging out the back sounding like a balloon having the air let out of it. THRBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB POP POP THRBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB LOL:D

Re: Through hull exhaust???

If you do it, make it switchable between thru hull and regular. I have switchable and I switch it to thru hull for about 15 seconds to get my fix and then regular a majority of the time. (My wife just rolls her eyes when I go to thru hull.) It does scream "look at me!" as you go down the lake. I would question the 4 cyl aspect...

+2 on the switchable

Remember that many areas have passes noise ordinances, what you may
'think' you might like out in the middle of the lake most likely isn't well received or tolerated at the landing or marina.

No one here has really answered his question. I would but i don't know much about this conversion. Have been reading and waiting for some one to actually give a little step by step.

He will have to start by yankin' da motor. Remove the exhaust pipe & blocking off the outlet at the gimbal hsg. Put the motor back, measure & start drilling. The exhaust flange will probably wind up at the waterline, perhaps lower.
Lotta puttsin around!!!

Re: Through hull exhaust???

Let's not overlook the Carbon Monoxide issues.

With a thru-hull exhaust, depending on your top-side aerodynamics, you may end up with CO in the boat, even without a tail wind, due to the "Station Wagon Effect."
With an underwater exhaust the fumes do not surface untill well aft of the boat, and even then it is highly diffused.
CO is slightly soluble but very reactive with the oxygen in the water and some gets converted to CO2 and remains in the water.
Your Tubers and Boarders do not even notice it.

Many people with inboard powered, Ski Tow-Boats are doing the opposite conversion that you are contemplating.
They are converting their thru-Hull exhaust to an underwater exhaust.
The area just behind the Prop Hub is, suprisingly, a low pressure zone.
The low pressure actually reduces your exhaust back pressure at some speeds and improves your performance.

Google "Fresh Air Exhaust" for some enlightening Info.

PROs: It sounds cool to some people!
CONs: Everything else!

Or legal!

Typical verbage .....

Exhaust Muffler Required
Every powercraft shall be equipped with a muffler or muffler system that is in good working order, in constant operation and effectively installed to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

No person shall operate or give permission to operate a powercraft in a manner to exceed the following noise levels:

90 decibels on the "A" scale in a stationary sound level test prescribed by SAE J2005. (Measured from one meter with engine at low idle speed when at dock or tied to another boat.)
75 decibels on the "A" scale measured as specified by SAE J1970. (Measured from shoreline with boat in any level of operation.)

No person shall remove, alter or modify a muffler in a way that prevents compliance with this section. No person shall operate or allow to be operated a powercraft with an altered muffler or muffler cutout or in a manner that bypasses or reduces the effectiveness of any muffler system.

For reference: A typical car driving past at 25 Ft. is approximately 80 db.
