Is this a trim ram issue? Popping and grinding noises from stern drive. pics and video attached!

Disconnect the rams from the drive at the outer end, That will separate the rams from the drive and eliminate the drive pivot pins as a possible source.. Does does sound like a bad ram (or maybe the bushings at the ram pivot points are super dry). They can be rebuilt, but are readily available...

    Quicksilver Alpha One Gen One

A picture would help. What "broke"? The controls aren't listed as an Alpha. They are the same for all models of sterndrives, Alpha (one and two), Bravo, etc. An 87 is pretty old and folks usually just update them instead of fixing them. I have the manual in PDF for the MerControls (all models)...

Anyone familiar with Hynautics Hydraulic Steering?

Never saw one before. Looks like a std seastar system with a handle that replaces the wheel, but has a 1/2 turn lock to lock ratio.

    Reliable sure lube hubs

One problem with the ones that bleed into the axle is, the grease nad harden / plug up in the hollow axle tube over the years, 1. Pumping grease in will blow out the seal or push the cap off 2. When the grease heats up and expands, due to nowhere to go against the full / hard grease in axle...

1995 Chaparral 2550 SX Refit and Restoration

OK, now you have 3 of them. I am starting to think you are a hoarder, there Drew. Where in NC did you find that one? I an in the NE of N, 90 min for the outer banks, on the Chowan River.

    Trim Tab relay location

Bennett trim tab pump. Self contained with solenoids under the smoked cover and no external relays. Dash switch for trim tabs tell pump where to send the fluid to the tabs and how. There are check valves under the solenoids (they just unscrew) that do get gummed up and mess up the operation...

4.3 runs great for about 30 minutes then bogs, pops won't accelerate

I think reading the service manual may have been of some help, too..... Just spit balling here.

    Trim tab pump and control

Here is what I believe should be: Also, Add some shrink tubing over those diodes / connections to prevent short circuits and bigger problems Also again: Make sure that port connection for hydraulic line is securely plugged on front of pump.

    Trim tab pump and control

That red wire from the Bennet should not be connected to anything. The red wire from the ProTrim should go to a 20 amp fuse powered from the battery. The voltage drop comes from that Bennett red wire circuit goes through solenoids. That is where your problem lies, me thinks. I will make a...

    Trim tab pump and control

I see what is going on here. Here is the ProTrim diagram. The green is down (deploy) and the blue wire is up (retract). If either the up or down are powered, the diodes power the stbd circuit. Green from the ProTrim is down - connected to pump blue (deploy) Blue from ProTrim is up - connected...

Disregard what I posted earlier. That assumption was not correct.

    Trim tab pump and control

Here is what the colors are for on the Bennett System: I have yet to find the wiring for that ProTrim switch to try to figure out what was exactly done using the diodes.. It would seem as though the proper way would be to disable either the port (red) or stbd (green) circuit and use the...

I haven't figured out the reasoning for the diodes. Need to find the info on that controller.

    Lowering the bunks . . .

Does your trailer have target bunks for the front part of the keel on the front? Could you possibly use a loner trailer tongue? I have seen tongue extensions that are used for shallow launch ramps to get trailer out deeper.

    Lowering the bunks . . .

OK, I see what you were saying. When you mentioned launching and retreiving, sounded like when backing down the ramp. If you have discs, the bleed off / block valve (connected to the back up lights) may be malfunctioning, preventing the surge coupler from applying the brakes is where I would...

    Mercruiser trim pump issue

The creaping back up may be air in the system. The dash meter jumping thing is normal when engine is running and there is a drain on battery from high electrical load being used.

    Lowering the bunks . . .

When you say you see much braking in launch or retrieval, are you questioning brake action when backing up? Please disregard if I read that wrong. There won't be any braking in reverse with surge brakes. I eliminated the surge coupler and went with EoH to have braking in reverse.
