XR-4 continues to rev with throttle closed

Unburnt fuel perhaps…or a vacuum leak maybe. Wouldn’t be revving her too much on the hose and neutral though.

    fuel problem

Hi. You may have a compromised fuel line and pulling air somewhere. Sorry for asking, but is the primer bulb going the right direction? Sure it is. Other thing is, if she’s been ran out of fuel or has a fuel restriction somewhere…you might have her take a gulp of air, meaning you may need to...

    Boat identification

Some of the uk boats have a hull number and certainly a makers number. But over here at least. The usual thinking that the last two numbers mean the year of manufacture, doesn’t always apply. Especially to boats before around 1983/84.

Classic Fifty electric choke testing and replacement

If it helps you any…I’m sure the choke is the same as the mariner 45, mercury 35-75 maybe too.

    1993 200 Xri 0D222728 Lower Unit Compatibility

Ah. It’s likely the xr6 I’m meaning then. Is that the one that’s the same as the mark et magnum ? Pre efi models. They have the smaller gear case

    Volvo Outdrive I.D.

Depending on your physical stature, I know that some guys make a cheap stand/cradle for helping to remove the Volvo DP290’s at least. No doubt this SP will be lighter than them. But will still be heavy enough. Certainly compared to a mercruiser alpha, if you might be used to similar. Perhaps...

    Volvo Outdrive I.D.

You can definitely just take the upper section off, and do the bellows, quite sure of it. Certainly can on the 290dp.

    Volvo Outdrive I.D.

290sp or 280sp. One of them for sure. Likely the former, if she’s an 89

    1993 200 Xri 0D222728 Lower Unit Compatibility

Probably not on track here. Not sure I know what an xri is. But I know that some XR2 versions (same as mariner magnum) of the v6 150hp at least…for some reason, use the smaller gearcase from your average v6 merc of the age.

Classic Fifty electric choke testing and replacement

Hi. If no joy with the above advice, I think the choke wire from the remote control/ignition, is a yellow wire with a thin black stripe.

    4-stroke 4hp Mercury 2003 outboard?

Early 4 strokes around this age…in my opinion, are usually pretty poor, heavy and gutless. These days…things have moved on, when it comes to the larger outboards. But to this day…I would honestly struggle to see the point or the worth of having even a brand new 4 stroke of around this size and a...

    Low Oil pressure at idle.

That would be the filter bypass, he is likely referring to. Not sure he is on the right track with that one. Is there any sign of oil in the water out the back ? Oil in the bilge ? Have a good look around the bilge if you can. Is there perhaps damage to the wiring to both the gauge and alarm...

    Low Oil pressure at idle.

Hi. I’m afraid it sounds as if it may be a genuine fault. If both the oil pressure switch alarm sensor and the gauge are both indicating low. Any sign of blue smoke out the back ? What’s the oil like ? Is it thin and smells of diesel perhaps? The turbo might be suspect for its oil bearing seal...

4.3 GXI-F Volvo Penta cranks but will not start

I’d agree with the above. I’d start by looking at the ignition wire from key to the starter relay. If this is shorting or loose, you’ll get exactly what you are. Check behind the dash and at the engine end. Check the main harness plug too. Or anything that is dangling in the bilge that shouldn’t be.

    6.2 fuel pressure value needed

Hi. Didn’t know there was a tbi one of these. Usually a efi 6.2 would be from the 2000’s onwards and mpi. Unless it’s been a built thing. When you say it just stops. You mean it starts struggling and stops…like a fuel issue ? Or it cuts out dead and instantly? Like an ignition or electric issue

Mercury 6 hp idle jet access

Yeah. You need to get past that silly tamper proof cap, if you want to do that. But if it’s the engine I think it is…being a fairly new 4 stroke 1 cylinder thing. I happen to know that these things are terrible for allowing oil from the sump, to run up into the carb, when they are stored in the...

    Smoke

Sounds ok to me. Being fussy…I’d maybe give her a little more trim up, when running like that. You’ll see some improvement in performance and fuel efficiency etc. all these things smoke when on a trailer or when started from cold at a fast idle. Better to have smoke than none. If you are...

Asking alot of a little outboard. best prop pitch?

Hi. Wishing you the best of luck in getting her propped suitably…but can I strongly and with the best intentions meant, urge you to try and think of this a temporary solution ? I’m sure there are some of these force engines that have managed to be reliable…but the vast majority of them have been...

    2006 HPDI Prop Question

I’m going to guess you have a 4 blade 26” trophy/rev4 or similar. Your buddy has a 25” different prop. Or his engine height is different, or conditions were different. Tiny things can make a difference to things at this end of the speed. Fuel, wind, hull condition and health of the...
