    Help quickly please

'Marine' engines will be in short supply as everyone in TX and a few other southern USA states are out buying long blocks after the winter they had. (sorry to say)

    Help quickly please

Mark IV were stamped steel as Scott said, having the rounded shape. The Gen 5/6 had the more beveled/squared-off shape. The SBC's had the ribs.

    Help quickly please

It sounds like the blocks being sold are 'Mark IV' and you have a 'Gen 5'. So I think the heads are going to be different (IIRC). The thing is that you probably should not use much from the original engine, as all the main pieces, blocks, heads, manifolds are suspect given the freeze damage...

Beginning of 1979 Cobia Sportster 18vbr Restoration

Looks like you are doing a good job. Subscribing in for the rest of the journey. Poly or VE resin is the better thing to use rather than epoxy . . . unless you are going to use epoxy 100% throughout the rebuild ($$$$).

    Glassing Stringers - First Time

If you are using stitched cloth, which it looks like you are, making cuts and overlaps at corners and around shapes is normal and fine. As for the air bubbles, it is usually a symptom of not wetting out the underside of the fiberglass cloth before you put it into place. The surface you are...

    IMPELLER IN OUT DRIVE

Remove the outdrive to check for a clog at the hose inlet at the bell housing BUT DON'T take off the lower unit, if that is what you were thinking. You will have a mell of a hess on your hands.

    Putting outdrive back in

    1) make sure you can see a clear path by looking in the driveshaft bellows, through the gimbal bearing and into the coupler. Make sure nothing is visibly obstructing. 2) make sure the height of the outdrive is equal to the bell housing so that the outdrive will go into the bell housing without...

How to make the two arms even?

you had a 50/50 chance and chose the wrong side (ram). The better method is to secure the 'pin' on the ram that is more extended and then let the weight of the outdrive do the work in bringing the rams into alignment. Be sure to have the grommets and washers ready for the other side as the...

    Putting outdrive back in

I think there is an echo in here, as I see four of the same posts. I don't see no metal indent on the shaft. Is the outdrive not going in all the way (I assume so) . . . were you able to get the alignment bar in all the way and get about 2" of spline teeth marks in the grease film on the...

Just curious . . . what are the casting numbers for the block and the heads on your original engine?

My check list is pretty straight forward . . . Beer (check) Boat (check) go boating 🤪 (y)

    Mercruiser 5.0L MPI 2007

The engine is a GM 5.0L so you should be able to use the casting numbers on the engine block and come up with a suitable donor engine. See if you can salvage the camshaft out of the original engine, as an automotive camshaft will have too much overlap.

    Crusader 454 Cooling

Here are some temperatures of my engine up to operating temperature, running at idle. The water coming out of the exhaust manifolds, heading to the H.E. is normally about 155-160˚ F. If that is helpful. I am getting about a 30˚ F rise in coolant temperature at idle within the exhaust...

    Paint Recommendations please

Dupont Imron or Awlgrip are probably the best 'above the water line' paints you can use. Interlux topside paints are fairly good . . .Rustoleum has a boat paint as well. You will want to use a 2-part paint so that the paint hardens rather than dries. Spray is best, but a "roll 'n tip"...

    Water on piston (Hydrolock)

Since you tore the engine down, there is not a lot that you can tell beyond visual inspection. Intake manifold is a possibility as are valve guides (maybe). It is interesting that the engine held a cooling system pressure test a couple of years ago. It would have been nice to see if it...

Buying a used boat anxiety-talk me down.

My thoughts. . . Sea Ray is a decent brand of boat. Not sure if/how the construction has changed from 1997 to 2004. Lots of boat companies were changing the construction methods/materials during that time frame. You really need to know what you are looking at in order to properly inspect a...

    Repowering 97 crownline. Best options?

Engine pulls in a boat are fairly easy IMO, having done just one though . . . Remove outdrive Remove the 2 rear bolts holding the engine at the transom assembly Remove bolts on front mounts Disconnect . . . fuel line, water intake hose, cable harness, power & ground wire at starter and...
