Any marine electrical control brands to avoid?

No experience with Sea dog but D&B list them as Wholesalers for what it's worth. Always use Blue Seas Systems for marine electronics components

Total boat electrical refit - looking for advice

Even if the 911 operator knows the exact location, what are they going to do about it? Send a squad car out to assist? Call the local USCG and tell them someone is in distress but we don't know exactly where? How long is all this going to take? With DSC, you push the distress button and...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Which picture is this? Doesn't matter which brand... hubs of the same rating are interchangeable.

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Your IMG 0525. jpeg is puzzling. How did you get a picture of the rear seal from the front of the hub without the rear bearing being in the way?

Total boat electrical refit - looking for advice

This unfortunately is a fallacy that’s cost lives. Time is of the essence in an emergency. Your best chance of immediate rescue is your fellow boater....not some 911 operator sitting somewhere in a call center who has no idea where you are or the means to notify fellow boaters in a position...

    Garmin power

Put a meter on your battery terminals then start the boat. Bet voltages drops below 12 volts with the starter turning Better yet, put a meter on the power cord at the back of the unit.

The voltage at the unit is dropping below the units minimum requirement. The most common cause is a weak battery. Time for a new battery

    Winterize boat

Doesn’t matter......if the boat has been in the water the lower unit oil needs at a minimum, to checked for moisture. Best just to change it and start anew. I start using stabilizer in the fuel once it starts getting cold. Never know when old man weather will shut me down till Spring

which bilge pump do i need with a manual / auto switch

“Auto” simply switches control from the switch (manual) to a float switch of some kind. Pick your poison....All switches eventually fail. Do you change the switch ($$) or the pump ($$$$)?

Is Vinegar Good for Desalinating Purposes ?

We clean aluminum cooling jackets used in critical industrial applications all the time with great success. Much smaller, more complicated coolant passages than found on any outboard. You're dissolving (neutralizing) the compounds via ionic exchange. Simply soaking isn't going to cut it. The...

Is Vinegar Good for Desalinating Purposes ?

Salts, in chemistry is a substance produced by the reaction of an acid with a base. A salt consists of the positive ion of a base and the negative ion of an acid. Without going to into the chemistry, the six most abundant ions of seawater are chloride (Cl−), sodium (Na+), sulfate (SO24−)...

    Drain hose shinkage?

I’ve specified and designed more hose assembles than I care to remember over the years. Most failures are age, load, installation or application issues. From my experience quality hoses have very little to no shrinkage at all. Double clamped hoses don’t come off... at least on fittings...

Define “family fun” space. Define “fishing boat” You’re going to find that “fishing boats” have the best rough water hulls by far. 40 miles from your home dock is 40 miles whether your 40 miles offshore or 40 miles down the ICW. How are you getting home?
