1978 JOHNSON 115 THERMOSTAT HOUSING HELP

I believe that is a bubbleback exhaust, which restricts access to the thermostat housing. Can it be done without pulling the powerhead? Not 100% sure on that. I think I recall seeing some butchering to gain access.

    Johnson Kill switch

Sure, you can do it that way. Kind of a shade tree way of doing it, but it will work. Make sure you seal those splices well to keep water out.

What am I looking at here?

Well if it has compression on all cylinders, the connecting rod must still be attached, so something must have gotten into the crankcase, and the con rod bashed it through the case.

    1977 Evinrude 35hp Corrosion

You may be able to get it to run long enough to unload it on some sucker, as some might do, but it won't last. It will leak or blow head gaskets due to the loss of the aluminum material that normally surrounds the cylinder liner. A well-known problem with salt water motors here on the Gulf...

40 hp evinrude (year unknown) selectric shift model. HELP setting points and timing!

That 1962 or newer motor does not have a separate cam. Cam profile is ground on the crankshaft. Simply set the points gap at 0.020" at their widest opening. That's not perfect, but is good enough. Or use the timing fixture.

Yes, another common problem, but I didn't want to scare you.

I can't find a tolerance for the end play. However, the wrist pin to bushing clearance is 0.0007 min to 0.0014 max. That is for new parts. Safe to say all those used ones out there are way, way over "max".

    1955 Johnson RD-17

Up and down play is normal within limits. It's called "end play". Slight click while rotating is also normal, depending on your definition of "click". If it is excessive, it likely is worn wrist pin bushings, a known problem with those engines. Again, depends on amount of wear. They can get...

1972 evinrude 9.5 need long shaft or different trim?

9822 left the factory as a short shaft. But that doesn't mean a hill of beans. It may have been converted to a 9823 (long shaft). You can tell the difference with just a quick glance. Does it have a 5" extension piece (# 62) above the lower unit gearcase (#14)?

    1977 115 evinrude ignition trouble.

Taking your story as a whole, it sounds almost classic. Classic in the sense that the timer base may be sticking a bit due to improper lubrication of the bushing. As you advance the throttle, the timer base should move all the way to the full advance screw. As it does this, the carburetor...

    1960 Evinrude Upper Gearcase

That hole is a construction hole---used to locate the casting in a fixture for machining. Once all machining is done, it serves no further use. It does not go through--at least better not go through. Perhaps that is why somebody went to all the trouble to fill it ???

Huh?? Carbon seal is held on by the snap ring. I don't think that is the problem though.

    57 Golden Javelin

However you start it, remote or manually---- 1. place throttle at slowest position. 2. gearshift in neutral 3. Now advance throttle to as far toward "Fast" as it will go (it will only go toward "Fast" as far the shifter interlock will allow in neutral). That is the proper throttle position...

    57 Golden Javelin

The lever is a throttle/speed control in case the remote control fails for some reason. It controls both spark advance and carburetor opening. Gearshift must be in forward gear to increase speed settings. The "capacitor" is not a capacitor. It is a mercury switch (has a drop of mercury...
