Push it in while cranking. Once it starts you don’t need to push it in any more. You will only need to push it in on cold starts. Once it’s warm it should fire just turning the key.
Thanks for stopping in and letting every know how it turned out. That’s always a big help to others reading through the post.
Glad you had success.

It’s pretty short video but it doesn’t sound to bad. Keep in mind it’s not a modern day motor and it will never sound like one.
Either get it in the water or in a barrel so you can get some back pressure on the exhaust and let her run for awhile and get good and warm before trying to work out...
Yep I miss understood what you said.
Flywheel keys can and do sheer.
The flywheel only needs to rotate a tiny bit to throw off the timing. There is only one way to know for sure and that is to check. It’s a free test and you can rule it off your troubleshooting list.
Some of that crap is probably jammed up in the pump and causing it to leak.
That pump needs to come apart.
As mentioned they are easy and cheap to repair and far better than anything you can buy today.
It’s hard to say without seeing or knowing what level of wear your talking about. I would say if it’s a concern to you that they are badly worn and you have the coin to replace everything then may as well.
Otherwise it’s a trial and error project.
Personally I would start with another compression test. Keep pulling until the needle stops rising. If you did it that way maybe try another gauge. If it turned out to be ok. Repair the primer and start moving forward from there.
Tell tail should flow even if the t stat is closed. I know it’s a separate passage but I honestly could tell you exactly where that passage is. Have you tried the mono line or weed wacker line thru the tell tale trick yet?
I can’t remember if you said yes or not.
Yes like you have noticed you pull it out and it springs back in. Every time you pull it it squirts a bit if fuel. I pull mine twice and its enough. If it’s cold out I’ll go for 3 pulls.
