    Correct----The older units ( BETTER ) used 4 bolts to hold the bearing carrier.-------In this thread the bearing carrier is positioned with 2 bolts.

    Sorry----I was not there looking over your shoulder.----I can only go by pictures presented here.---Typical of running without thrust washer.-----On more than one occasion have I seen mystery damage done on motors.------Good luck with the repairs.

    To me it is obvious that this lower unit was run with no thrust washer ( wrong one ?? ) and damaged the precision surfaces.-----Hence the difficulty in a simple job of pulling the bearing carrier.

    Well----It looks like this unit was run without the thrust washer in place.----There is damage and rub marks that simply should not be there !

    To me it sounds like the classic ----lean sneeze-----Caused by low speed needle in too far.---Or throttle plate opening too early.-----Easy fix in my opinion.

    That would allow water to get INSIDE the engine.-----JB weld would repair that.----But I see damage / wear ( scoring ) on bottom piston.-----Here that motor would be torn apart for inspection.----You found the " smoking gun " on this motor.
